not having spare key and trade in price

Featured Replies

How much difference does not having the spare key make on trade in price? Recently moved house and can't for the life of me find my other key but I'm wanting to swap my car asap.

My father recently traded in a car that had only one key.  It was never mentioned and therefore made no difference.  I do know that WE Buy Any Car will reduce their offer by a couple of Hundred if you only have one key.

Don't mention it unless/until asked. If you lose anything, expect it to be no more than £200 (costs of buying plip, cutting blade and coding key to vehicle).

I lost one of my folding car keys and managed to purchase a normal none folding key from my supplying dealer for about 40quid. It works okay and is good enough for a stand by.

Then about 6 months ago, I found the missing key in an old coat in the shed, that I had worn when I did a run to the local civic amenity centre! IE the tip! You will need to get all the keys reprogrammed.

So Ive got 3 keys. Might be worth enquiring about a basic replacement if it means getting a better trade in?

most older used cars only come with 1 key these days! I've even been asked to do keys for 2012 & 2013 reg cars that have just come with 1 key

Assuming they were ex rentals

nope, previous owners had either lost them or forgotten to hand them in when they traded them in

I've been told if the spare isn't handed over it'll be £200 charge before new one is released.

with a trade in? or a rental? never heard of a garage demanding £200 if spare key isn't handed in with a trade in

Bugger best start looking again then.

well if you don't find it i'm sure you can get a key done for less than £200 the dealer demands!

Good point. The thing that's annoying me is i have always kept it safe but since the house move in just can't find it anywhere.

Yup only states 2 keys, not both 'plip' keys.

Luckily we have ours

Well I HAD to have 2 keys, yet the dealer didnt give me the 2nd key as it was at the other branch.

FFS.

did you charge them £200 for not providing you with 2 keys? :)

Nope, but made a scene in front of some customers
