2006 mk2 octavia 4x4 haldex service

Featured Replies

Hi guys

I'm trying to find out if my mk2 2006 octavia 4x4 has an oil filter to change on the haldex?

I've read contrasting info online, some say it only needs oil changes every 40,000 miles and the oil filter is lifetime.

Other people have said it needs oil + flter changing.

Im worried now as it was in the skoda dealer this morning getting the haldex service at 40k, but my invoice has no mention of a filter, just parts 'oil - high perfo' plus labour.

Does anyone know for sure?

Thanks for any replies

Your car is pre FL so it has haldex gen 2 so it needs the oil and filter changing.

Hmmm, not what i was hoping to hear, i asked the garage for a haldex service, surely they would have changed the filter too? Surprised not to see the filter listed on the invoice, only oil

Was it a main dealer or independent?

Yes i will in the morning, its just nice to have the correct info before a garage tries fobbing me off, i've been there before! ( not with this dealer though)

It doesn't help that the service book makes no mention of it.

Quite right!

My 2008 definitely has a filter

they might be sold as a "repair KIT"    try the question on another dealer first      p.s   GEN IV  does not have a filter change for anyone interested

Well I phoned the skoda dealer that did the oil change, they said their computer system only shows an oil change, no filter to change.

I wasnt sure if they were correct, so i called TPS, the parts guy used my reg number on his system and told me there was a price for the haldex oil and for the haldex oil filter.

I then phoned 2 other skoda dealers who told me theres no filter to change.

Considering the replies from people above, i thought maybe the skoda dealers arent too used to servicing haldex systems, so i called skoda uk customer services. After a few hours they got back to me after consulting the technical department.

The final answer from skoda HQ.......my car only needs the haldex oil changed every 40,000miles, no filter change.

In that case Skoda don't know squat

How do you mean?

My car isnt a scout, only a 4x4 estate, perhaps that makes a difference?

No Scout and 4x4 have the same underpinnings. Makes me wonder if the filter was changed on mine as they were supposed to do when I bought it...

I think perhaps the haldex unit might physically have a filter in it (would explain why the part is available from TPS).

However, skoda say its an oil change only as confirmed by skoda HQ technical department this afternoon.

I must admit i didnt speak to them direbtly myselt, i had to go through an advisor.

Perhaps the filter is for life? It certainly doesnt come up on the compueter jobsheet at 3 different skoda dealers, oil change only every 40k miles.

If yours was done at a skoda garage i would bet only the oil has been changed as per their computer.

Right, I have had a look on elsawin.  It differentiates between Gen2 and Gen4 systems but when you go through to the oil change process it takes you to the same page regardless of which you choose.

Looking further is says that the filter is removable on the Gen2 but not the Gen4, but it doesn't why or when you would change it.

Went through the same thing myself, I also have a 2006 4x4 estate. At 1st glance two dealers said that there was no mention about a filter change on the haldex system when I requested an oil/filer change at the last service. When I questioned this the 1st dealer said there was defo no filter to change whilst the 2nd dealer also asked their master Tech who said there is a filter and it should be changed along with the oil.

The filter was about £28 I think.

As Trundlenut said Elsa certainly seems to be a little unclear as to which models/generations of haldex require what. I have always been under the general assumption that all pre FL MKII 4x4s need the filter changing and on FL models its just the oil.

Mark.

as above

I have a copy of the page from ELSAWIN titled Remove and install the oil filter for Haldex coupling (final drive "02D/0AV") (Octavia II).  It includes the note that 'On vehicles with the rear final drive "OBR", the oil filter for the Haldex coupling is not replaced.

02D/0AV are the final drives fitted to the 2nd generation Haldex coupling.  The final drive OBR is fitted with the 4th generation Haldex coupling.

The Haldex 2 and Haldex 4 couplings use different spec oils.  I will ensure that my dealer confirms that they know which oil they should be using in my Haldex 4-equipped car when it is serviced shortly and have it in stock.

I came across that page too, but I couldn't find anywhere where it gave the interval for changing it. The gen4 is shown as having a filter but marked as non replaceable.

It really is scary when Skoda themselves believe it does not need a filter change - all I can confirm is that the 2006 Octavia 4x4 I have, had to have a new Haldex controller at 79k miles just before I bought it - the Skoda dealer who fitted it were the original supplier dealer and had also serviced the car from new. They had conducted two oil changes in that time WITHOUT changing the filter.Whether this had a contributory factor in the controller failing I do not know but it is crazy that they are unaware of how to conduct preventative maintenance properly.
