Does Phonegap mean anything to you?

If so, yay!

I'm working on a new www part of briskoda and while I've been pushing mobile first for a while now, I've not actually sat down to do a mobile app.

Today I've reinstalled (tried it a year ago) phonegap, well cordova.

Just wondering if anyone here uses it daily etc or has a desire to?

Loose spec is a mobile briskoda app, not for forums, but for a few other things, tyres, fuel, reminders etc member services, vcds, valleting, meets etc... I'll settle for a hello world for today though.

I know what Phonegap is, haven't used it myself though. Some people at my work have, from what I remember them saying it's good for basic apps but not for anything advanced or platform-specific. It should be OK for your app though I would've thought.

I thought Phonegap was the distance between your out-stretched hand and the actual position of your phone when it is ringing, but you are unable to move (ie - feeding the baby).

I get this a lot.

Having used it for my university project, I can't say I'm too fond of it! The supported features list for different OS/hardware is rather optimistic! Sounds as though for what you propose that it should be sufficient as little if any hardware integration would be needed. It seems like you would mostly want an app that is basically a mobile site. You should get on well using the JQuery Mobile library tp make things pretty and some of the new HTML5 standards such as web storage will be useful for storing tyre and fuel info etc.

To make it easier you can also use the PhoneGap Build Cloud service to push your app to their servers and have them build and return you all the native installers to save you maintaining all the mobile SDKs on your system. If you do go ahead and use it, it would probably be best to read up on Itunes App standards as phonegap does not deal with this very well and it may lead to your app not being approved by the app store. PhoneGap is good for generic apps however it loses the OS specific quirks when it comes to menu layouts and terminating applications etc.

Drop me a PM if you have any more questions :)

Thanks for the replies guys.

In essence yes this app will not yield much hardware specific integrations. Maybe geo/camera. From initial tests these appear to work on my old crappy samsung s9000.

The build service will be handy for the blackberry and windows phones. As it's not hardware centric, imagine fairly easy to test. Storage api is the only iccky one after that, for offline synch.  But thats possibly ok too as I was toying with using a k/v store on the backend.

The app will probably be a simple list detail app. Ironically the hardest part is the backend as I'm still a bit blurgh about the tech stack I've used for the last 7 years. Hey ho, into the future and all that jazz.
