Some questions about oil, coolant and other future mods on my Greenline.

Featured Replies

Hi

First post, but not new to the forum at all=)

I have a 08' Fabia 1.4TDI Greenline with DPF (PD80).

So i been looking for stuff to do with my car just to spice it up some, so naturaly i ended up on briskoda.net=)

I see so many nice cars among this forums memebers, if any have tips on exterior mods to make my greenline look nicer just shout out!

Oh, its an estate btw:P

But first of all im gonna focus on mods to give the car a natural long life and low tear, its a greenline after all.

The mods i done so far:

Changed coolant with Aven's Auto Cool 180°

Covered the exposed electrical connections(ground, batterypoles and so on) with acid free vaseline.

Ordered Pipercross performance airfilter, the type that fits in the original airfilterbox.

Ordered Philips GT150 headlights.

Mods im gonna do ASAP:

Change oil and oilfilter, the stuff the service personel put in it look like tar!

Planed to use Castrol Edge FST 5W30, i believe this complies with the VW507 standard that i also *believe* is what my car is supposed to use.

If anyone have some tips on other hi-end oil and also a good oilfilter for this car please share the information=)

Next is the pikey-mods. I'm not going with the cupra snorkel, but i would like to find the partnumber or an ebaylink for a PD130 or PD150 snorkel.

I also intent on heatshielding the snorkel some, how im gonna do that i do not know yet.

Im also looking for a vent for the fender to air the SMIC some more, if anyone know a good went to use it would be awesome. So far i been looking at the ventcovers you use outdors on houses, but they are darn deep and ugly.

I also want to invest in a pump-duse box just to give the car some more "ompf", i do not want to remap it as its over a days drive to the nearest tuner, and i stil have new car warranty since the car didnt hit the road before 2010. Changine the map before and after a service wil take days:P

Anyone know of a good and conservative pump-duse box(Diesel box)?

Mods for the future:

Tinting and heatshielding back windows, often have my dogs with me so.

Better tires for both summer and winter.

Maybe some nicer rims?

Brakes and ARB's!

Remap when warranty runs out.

Tectyl treat the underside of it and maybe get some teflon cover and noise dampening.

In short for the tl;dr 'ers: Where is a good place to get a PD130/150 snorkel, a good hi-end motoroil and oilfilter, vents for pikey SMIC mod and a good diesel-box? =)

Best regards

Truls

Blimey - wouldn't you have been better off buying a Monte Carlo (or even a vRS)!?>!?

And in the UK, a pikey is a gypsy - I don't know what it is in Norway!

Sounds like you have loads of ideas and that people will come to you for advice!

Good luck - sorry, I can't help with mods, as my Monte is too new and I may not be keeping it.

I am also looking into the CCV mod with a catch can or just went it to air directly. I did however notice a connector with wires going from the pipe that goes from CCV to the intake, i never seen that on a car before, can anyone elaborate on it? Can i stil safely do a CCV mod on it?

My god was i in chock when i saw just how black and tar-like the gunk in the CCV pipe was!

Also is there a way to restrict the EGR alittle one the Greenline?

And I thought people bought the GreenLine for fuel economy...not for making it into something it obviuosly is not, but I do applaud your guts to take on the challenge.

Anyway, while I cannot comment on everything you plan to do, I do have some thoughts.

The 1.4 PD 80 is - I believe - the same engine that is in the Mk1 1.4 TDI PD, albeit it only rendered 70 PS there, and IMHO and experience that little thing was more than sufficient for Norwegian road standards and speed limits ;) and by all means far better than the current 1.2 TDI CR that sits in the GL I drive at the moment.

Osram Night Breaker did wonders to my night vision, but since you have already ordered the Philips it's to late for that now.

As to tyres, I would recommend Nokian Hakka R for winter (or Conti WinterViking 2 if you prefer spikes) and - if you have 15" wheels - Hakka Blue for summer, otherwise Hakka Green, after all you're driving a GreenLine, not a racing car :)

Good luck with with your mods, and I hope to meet you on the road one day...look out for the Fabia Estate with yellow DRLs or yellow fogs!

I think you got the wrong idea of what im doing to my Greenline, im making an economic car even cheaper by modding it to use less and wear less.

I never have to change coolant again after the Auto cool instalment, and autocool doesnt alow for corrosion, nor does it expand when hot, it doesn boil until 180C so boiling pockets wont happend inside the block and so on. It also protects the hoses from drying out some.

The CCV mod is to hinder residue to clog up the SMIC and pipes, ensuring better cooling for the charged air and better airflow. I also believe that it reduces the load on the DPF some, but not sure on that.

The Pipercross filter and the biger snorkel is to alow more airflow when you first engage the engine, so you wont get so much black smoke from it before the turbo spools up and can deliver enought air.

Also i can clean and reoil the Pipercross filter, so i dont have to litter unessesary with one time use only filters.

The reson for heatinsulating the snorkel and airfilterbox is to prevent the heatradiation from the engine to heat up the air that is about to be charged, just to make sure the density of oxygen is as good as i can get it.

The reason for the vent mod on the SMIC is to ensure density of the charged air, that wil ensure i have more oxygen available in the cylinder under detonation, so the combustion wil be more complete.

The vaseline is to hinder corosion on critical electric parts.

The Philips lightbulbs was orderes since one of mine just blew, so i had to order some new ones ASAP, and i found a test where the Philips ones won so meh, bought them.

I want this car to last! And i want it to be cheap in the long run! :P

However i do not see why i cant upgrade parts when i have to change them anyway, thats why many of the upgrades are for the future, im not upgrading until standard parts are worn down.

Ouch! You caught me there, because I have to admit that  I had absolutely no clue about what you were talking about. I do now. I still cannot comment on your mods, since I know nothing about what you plan to do, but I do hope that the mods will have the desired effect, so please keep us updated as to how you are getting along. And BTW, I would be interested in learning how you're going to tint your rear windows, since I plan on doing the same eventually.

jankph, you gonna have a laugh at this mate=)

I just did a mod to the CCV system, as we already know it feeds the oil fumes into the intake just in front of the turbo. The hose vas filled with black oil when i disconected it from the engine.

Her are some pictures of the "mod" :p

The original placement of the CCV pipe.

And heres how i blinded the connector in the intake side:P

This is just temporary to see if the car would run with the mod, gonna redo it on Monday when the scrapyard opends up so i can get some hoses to work with.

I also  removed the pipes that go from the turbo and down to the SMIC i could see that they where covered in black tar and that the EGR valve was filled with hard resin i could scrape of.

I cleaned the pipes and the valves with a toothbrusk and some diesel just to get it somewhat better. I went online and ordered this EGR restrictor plate, I didnt go with a complete removal since i realy dont want a engine light on my dashboard all the time.

When it arives im gonna pul all the pipes between the turbo and the intake apart and clean it of REALY good.

May be alot of spelling errors and stuff in this post as im also making dinner atm:P Grøt<3

So i fittet a EGR blanking/restrictor(with a 9mm hole in it) plate today, car feels just the same as before. I also cleaned the gunk out of the piping and EGR valve.

Next up is a filter for the coolant so i can see if theres any resedue in the coolantloop. Just gonna fit a normal bike/scooter fuelfilter in the hose that returns the coolant to the expansion tank. I looked it up and the glue in those filters should be stable in the coolantsolution i have.

Tomorow im gonna have an oilchange, i deliberatly delayed the oilchange until the EGR mod was done. Gonna try Mobil1 ESP Formula 5w-30 to start with, theres a marine dealership close by that have some realy competative prices on it so=) I'm also instaling the modified fender lining tomorow, have to be sure the glue is hardened before i install it. So far i spent 150ish gbp on it on the mods, happy so far=)

I also found a dealership nearby that ofers remaps, but charging what would be the same as 525GBP to remap it with a generic map i sort of feel i should rather go with a Shark STS or something, what do you guys think?

Maybe a mod can move this tread to the projects section so i can edit the OP?

Anyway, i installed a filter on coolant return and it is collecting some sediment, not much but some. I also installed the performance air-filter even tho i know its basically snakeoil:P

Now i want to try some mods to get more MGP/FE. I was looking at the winter grille covers for my model and maybe a splitter to remove some air from the underside of the car. Maybe I'm spiting hairs:P I'l also gonna look into making some wheel covers out of lexan or something.
