PD170 Turbo - What to do?

Featured Replies

My turbo on my vRS TDi (PD170) is making a police siren noise, has done since I bought it (back end of July) and apparently for quite a while when the previous owner had it. The siren noise gets quieter as it warms up but it is still there and makes me nervous to boot it. Does whistle a bit too.

My question is what should I do about it? I've just driven 2500 miles to the south of France and back and felt it was underpowered, but that may have been down to the heat, aircon and fully loaded car. The car did manage it though without any issues, no limp mode, etc. I'm thinking of getting the current turbo reconditioned/refurbished, as the car has only done 62k miles and it'll be cheaper than a brand new turbo.

The car is remapped with a DPF removal, but got no proof of this and don't know power and torque figures. A mate of mine told me the map might make the turbo more audible. Would this be the case?

I should also say that the previous owner (member of this forum) had the turbo checked by a Toyota dealership (where he works) and they said it looked OK.

Bump. Can anyone help?

I'd suggest doing nothing.

We use the 1.9tdi's at work - some have noisier turbo's than others. One '08 plate was so loud inside the car that one passenger thought that I still had the sirens activated! 120k miles and it never gave any trouble and was one of the quicker ones on the fleet.

I had a Leon FR PD170 for just over 3 years. It whistled when i took it out on test drive from the dealer and every day since. Never missed a beat

Fair enough thanks for the replies. Maybe I'm worrying too much!

Another thing I was thinking was that the map that's on the car was causing the noises from the turbo. I'm going to take it to a local tuning company with a rolling road and get it checked out eventually.

Sorry to jump on this thread,

I've just had new GT1749VC on my Fabia VRS with a compressor from a PD170 and PD150 internals.

It whines a lot (but is quieter after about 20 mins driving).  There were no obvious visual issues with the compressor or shaft play when fitted so am hoping this is just normal.

How has yours held out Dan4291?

Thanks :)
