Throttle Body

Featured Replies

Hi everyone!

Car: Skoda Fabia Classic, 2006, 1.4 Tdi

Just had my throttle body replaced and fitted for £552.... ouch.

Anyway, the garage owner told me I needed a new one and so I did (he told me he could only get the part from Skoda).

I have had it replaced, the old one was "Sticking" closed. After 2 seconds cleaning a little bit of carbon, the gate is now moving more freely (literally 2 secs of cleaning).

Is this right? Have I just wasted £550?

Thanks for any help,

Pictures are available

Many thanks,

Throttle body on a diesel?

Not aware of a Tdi having a throttle body. Could it have been called something else? Maybe post a photo of the part?

From what you say I am wondering if it is the exhaust gas recirculation valve?

Hello Devonutopia,

Please go to this link: http://tinypic.com/r/122yhp5/5

According to the garage, it is a "Throttle Body". No attempts have been made to clean it, however! I can slightly hear the ratchet inside, is this good?

I am thinking of taking it to an independent person to check this potentially, the garage are normally quite good, but this has given me some doubts!

Cheers

Thats the egr mate not the throttle body and yes all it will of needed was a clean probably, money grabbing garages strike again!

Its either the egr or an anti-shuddervalve, judging by the plug. Egr's are normally vacuum actuated right? So i would say it is the latter

Chances are a decent clean would have solved it if it was sticking. I used to do this as frequent maintainence on my tdi, all be it a 1.9, just to remove the gunk.

Looks like a throttle body to me.

Different part but do look alike.

It should have been removed and cleaned first, if you have cleaned it yourself that's clear enought it wasn't cleaned previously by the garage.

Quite poor to hear really, it's almost part of general maintenance to clean these type of parts.

A good diagnostic equipment could tell you if it will work, and a test can be done on it even removed from the car on a work bence.

Hi guys,

Heres another thing....

Got the car back last night to go home, before I cranked it, the same engine maintenance light came back on.... (alternator warning light!!!).

I know 100% this was not a fault (because the RAC guy showed me the faults, one being the swirl flap? hence the replace throttle body). They were running my car on tick over yesterday for 1-1.5 hours maybe, with the AC on fully cold, full blast?!

Anyway, what do people recommend? It could just be the battery is connected dodgy? Should I drove a while before doing anything?

Thanks for all your help, will be taking the old uni to another garage to ask if they can test it!

I've had this problem before. When my garage takes cars from the AA in, we NEVER use their diagnosis of a fault, we starts from scratch and find out our selfs.

Did you have an engine management light on the dash or a battery light?

The garage would have got paperwork from the AA with a diagnostic print out of the fault and what they think should be changed, I think they have seen the throttle body fault and changed that anyway.

Hi Freedom,

The RAC man said my car was ok to drive (with car) (Friday).

It is the engine maintenance light... the diagnosis said low voltage from the alternator..

What do you think I should do? Is the ratchet sound on my Throttle body and bad thing, could that of warranted the change? (not the reason he gave me at the time...)

Thanks again for the help... this car is costing me money! haha

Hmmm, so that's the throttle body from a 1.2 petrol on a 1.4 TDI.  I am confused!  Which engine is fitted please? :D

As for the battery thing - it's probably just running a little low on voltage.  Should sort itself out over time with a few god runs to recharge.

So if you say that a diesel doesent have a kind of "throttle body" (some type of flap), how does a diesel control the amount of aer it get's in the engine?

Car is 1.4 Turbo Diesel.

RAC engineer said issue with swirl flap, but didn't have the tools there and then to do further testing (BEAR IN MIND, RAC have just got state of the art roadside equipment).

Engineer has replaced throttle body (will be getting tested today).

Cheers

A diesel runs on excess air all the time. If it's a non-turbo diesel, the only thing that is controlled is the amount of fuel injected.

If a TDI, it uses the boost of the turbo to increase available air, but even if 0 boost, air will still be going into the cylinders. There is no throttle body on a diesel.

The anti shudder valve looks very similar to a one, but that closes to shut off the air supply to the engine, and turn off the engine cleanly, hence anti-shudder.

Get them to confirm the part number of what they have replaced.

If they have bought it from Skoda, it will be on the invoice from the Skoda parts dept.

Ok. understood. so what is the purpose of this flap?? The inlet mainfold flap motor. What it controles?

That is the anti shudder valve.

When you turn off the ignition, it closes off the supply of air to the engine to prevent it shaking when shutting down.

ok ;) thanks for info. I didnt know that a diesel needs a cutt of supply of air for the engine to shut down normaly.

Should it be cleaned periodically? It affects the performance or the health of the engine somehow if its cludged?

I have noticed when I turn my engine off, it shudders less now.

Do you think this repair was required?

Cheers

Nope.

You should have come here BEFORE getting the work done.

Garages are just fitters, not mechanics, they simply replace whatever the computer tells them to replace.

Garages will not clean and repair parts because they cannot guarantee the work, if they had simply cleaned the part in question and you went back to them saying the problem was still there then you would quite reasonably say that they had to the work again for nothing and you'd pay for the new part only. Therefore all garages would simply go out of business eventually as they bled money having to do every job twice.

If you feel they overcharged you then get evidence of the parts cost and compare it to their invoice, you can quite reasonably complain that they've overcharged for the part or the labour and give you a partial refund, or not.

Good luck, try and be better informed next time you have a problem.

Totally Agree, but I did get quotations from other places in the same region.

I will be getting the old part cleaned up as a spare.

Thanks for the help!

I commute to work daily and needed my car back up & running, so unfortunately did not have the time.

It is a pain, but that sometime is how the cookie crumbles! Sigh...
