My heart is now officially broken.

 

On 1 March 2003 I picked up my new and beautiful Octavia 2.0 petrol in Admiral Blue (poor choice - everyone seemed to get those;  I should have taken Cayenne Yellow - how often do you see those?) and my wife got a couple-of-months old Fabia 1.4 MPI.

 

Fast forward ten and a half years and she now has a brand new and also beautiful Fabia 1.2 TSI in some sort of silver and I've now got ... her old Fabia.  Why?  Well, it made more economic sense to replace the car that had done the following:

 

• 178,000 miles ...
• ... on the original shock absorbers ...
• ... the original exhaust ...
• ... and the original clutch
• With the air conditioning still working, and never having had to be regassed

Instead of the one that was a little older, had a fairly new clutch and had only done 35,000 miles.

 

In those ten and a half years, I've replaced fewer parts (apart from braking components) than I have fingers.  In all that time, it let me done precisely twice, both times after being buried in snow a couple of years back.  That car owed me nothing - nothing at all.  I like to rub that in the face of arrogant comedians who disparage Skoda.  Let them keep their inferiority complexes, I'm not interested.

 

And right now it's sitting in Bickerton Skoda's car park waiting to be picked up by a dealer who'll probably abuse it for a few months then scrap it.  It shouldn't be allowed.  If I were single, it wouldn't be - I'd spend the money on whatever breaks between now and whenever the car finally packs it in, like every other car I've ever had (I have a weird aversion to selling cars - I prefer to let them die with dignity in my loving care rather than release them into the community).

 

Still, I'm sure I can get another 100,000 out of what I will always see as "the wife's car."

 

And then, dammit, I'm having a Superb.

 

I drive Skoda.  And I'm proud of that.

Aye - my Jaguar XJ40 (my previous car - no, really) owner's manual told me to run the A/C for at least 10 minutes per week, advice I heeded with my Octavia, leading to over a decade of pleasurably cool, mist-free motoring.  I've found over the years that there are plenty of things you can do to extend the life of your car, the main one being just ... drive.

 

They will never forgive you for not using them.
