Downloading programs to extnl hard drive

Featured Replies

My PC is getting full and to alleviate this I was thinking of putting some of the programsthat are not used very frequently  onto an extnl hard drive. I have tried copying to a DVD/CD but the programs will then not run. Will they run from an extnl HDD? If they will run can I just cut and paste from the C drive to the new extnl one or is it safer to download new from the appropriate website direct to the HDD?

copy and pasting with programmes won't work because the amendments to the registry etc etc won't have been made. You'll need to re download the programmes and then reinstall them on your external HDD. You'll be asked where to install them so make sure you choose the external's letter eg D: when reinstalling.

Thanks. I had a feeling that was the case.

Program installations shouldn't make all that much difference - within reason of course, depending on the size of your drive, how many you have installed and what they are!

You're better reviewing your actual data - photos, music, films etc and archiving that onto an external drive, usually dependant on when you last accessed the information.

Nope. Not gonna happen.....you would have to mess with the registry to get those to work......how about making an image of your machine and then imaging it back to a larger disk...... Advantage would be A: an external backup copy is available and B: no need to re-install everything....
