Alloy gouged FFS

Featured Replies

I'm having no luck with the car right now.

I was pushed over to the side by a van on a rural road this morning. As we passed I heard a big bang and my first thought was "arrgh wing mirror!".

But it was fine. Driving along the car seemed absolutely fine. Parked up and had a look round.

******, big chunk out the alloy on the passenger side. A some or something had just shaved the edge of the tyre but caught the alloy and scooped out a big bit. It's not dented at all, just something sharp has sliced off the outer ~5mm of the alloy.

Tyre was still inflated fine. It's a fair bit worse than your average kerbed alloy and I wondered if it was fixable or new alloy time.

I'll get a picture up if I can.

Bloody hell, not a good run recently.

Best to get the balancing checked and perhaps the tracking too.

(Can you swap sides and claim it was part of the car park incident!!!)

I feel your pain. I've had that happen to me... twice.

Both by really well driven 'Cheshire Tractors'  :wall:

Yep, post a pic up and we'll see. All depends on how severe the angle was, of the kerb into the wheel....

It's bad but maybe not as bad as I was remembering now I've had another look. Tyre has stayed inflated anyway.

I think I maybe clipped the kerb near a drain. There are no kerbs anywhere else on the road. Other than that it would have just been a random stone or other object.

I doubt the tracking has been affected, it's so close to the edge that it was more of a slice than a hit. I think it'll repair.

Jeeez man ! You don't believe in doing half a job FFS ! What about the tracking ! Its a new alloy or a refurb

Keep an eye on the tyre.

Sorry to hear about your front near side wheel Aspman.

I had a new front near site tyre fitted 3 weeks ago and that's resulted in slight scratches on MY wheel too :(

It was perfect before that, because I checked them a few days earlier.

Is that a cut in the side wall or is it just the way the photo was taken?

What did you hit the edge of Granite Kerb or the likes?

Tiny sliver cut off the face of the tyre there. No bulge as it's all on the rim flange guard so not too worried.

Dunno what I hit George. There are no kerbs other than around the occasional drain every 100m or so. Can't see how a kerb would do that. No potholes either or ditch at the side of teh road. I guess either it was the drain kerb or something hidden in the grass.

I didn't actually think I was that far over. Like I said I thought it was the mirror he passed so close to me.

Maybe Ironwork then, its ******* hard luck.

No idea how i took a little chunk out of a tyre, but the tyre stayed and the wheel is replaced.

(not for this little damage it got a bigger hit on a high kerb in an Asda car park.)

It doesn't take much of an object to do wheel damage.

I wouldn't worry too much about that, I was expecting worse to be fair!

A decent refurb place will sort that out - like you say, it's more of a touch/graze impact on the wheel than any direct gouge damage.

Refurb will sort that.  My Dad hit a rock in his old Golf and that knocked a hole (like a chip, not a scrape/slice) about a centimetre deep into the alloy!  That was built back up and sorted during the wheel refurb, and you'd never have known.

Yay.

Car into the coachworks today to get the rear bumper fixed from when supergran thumped it.

Asked about the alloy, they said they would do it for £50 while it's in for the bumper. Cheaper than the chip and scratch guys.

Then they gave me an S-Type Jag as a loan car.

Ok the Jag is a bit rough but I'm still enjoying saying [in best Clarkson voice] "I'm off in the Jaaaaag".

Get your geometry checked. Well worth the payment even if its ok. Just for the thought of knowing that its ok.

I've just had it done so it'll just have to wait unless something feels off. Pocket money spent for now.
