1.6 tdi Manual vs DSG

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if there is much of a difference in mpg between the a manual and DSG car and is the new 7 speed dsg a reliable beast.

I've had DSG on a couple of previous cars and the performance & reliability has been impeccable and that is why I have chosen another car with it.

I don't think you need to have any concerns about having a DSG gearbox. However like anything mechanical you could always get the odd rouge one or two. And if it's a new car it should be covered by the warranty.

+1 my present Octy has DSG & it has been faultless. I have a new car on order & it will also have DSG. My only proviso was to pay for extended warranty as they can be expensive to repair if things do go wrong.

I am a low mileage user & never had a manual Octy so can't really comment on mpg figures.

Some DSG equipped engines have better manufacturers MPG than the manual with same engine

We're going DSG next, and the quoted mpg is the same

The MkII 1, 8 TSi DSG was better than the diesel for both performance and economy.

Shame that the 1, 8 isn't available for the MkIII.

It's not better than the MkII diesel on economy.

I've got the 2.0 TDI DSG and it's woeful on economy compared to the manual version.

Petrol engines get the same or better mpg with a DSG, diesels DO NOT.

Driving a 2.0 TDI manual in the Sharan, I'd say it's the engine

I did 70,000 miles in my previous 1.6CR Elegance Combi with the manual box and the average was 54mpg (measured), some journeys I recorded 60mpg on the computer. I have done around 11000 in my latest 1.6CR  Elegance Combi with the DSG box and the averages are around 53 mpg. I have recorded up to 59 mpg on some journeys.

Most of my journeys are on motorways so I tend to cruise at 75 (indicated) in 7th.

I prefer the DSG to the manual for the 1.6CR because in the manual at 40mph I was always between 4th & 5th (my previous 1.9pd's manged 40mph in 5th no problem) The 7 speed DSG has a better spread on the ratios and it makes a better drive, plus you can change manually if you want.

I'm not that fussed either way between a manual or DSG, but I think I will have another DSG in the next Octavia.

I went from a 2.0 TDI 140 manual Yeti to a DSG version of same and I'm about 1mpg down, so not much in it as far as I can see.
