1.9Tdi auxiliary electrical coolant heater question

Featured Replies

Hello.

I have a 1.9tdi ATD skoda, I have had the car about 5 months now, been very happy with it and have tried not to fiddle with it at all.

One thing I noticed but have not done anything about is the temperature of the coolant does not get to half way up the scale, i think the thermostat needs changing, not a big deal.  I have VCD and noted the loading on the alternator was always over 60% but didnt think to much about it.

Yesterday I was reading about  PD engines here: http://www.myarchive.us/richc/VW_TDI_with_PumpeDuse.pdf and read about these engine having an auxiliary electrical coolant heater.  My questions is in light of the fact my stat is dead, is the electrical coolant heater running all the time trying to speed things up?

Cheers

Jon

In countries with cold climates, an electrical auxiliary heater is used to heat the coolant at low temperatures.

The UK isn't classed as a cold country and your car is extremely unlikely to have an auxiliary heater.

Have you had a look at what the actual coolant temperature is using VCDS?

I have done but should review it.

If you have an auxiliary heater, then a stuck open thermostat will cause it to run all the time. I had this happen on a Chrysler I used to own which had a diesel fired aux heater......it ran all the time when the thermostat broke.

AFAIK the Auxiliary heater option was never available in the UK on VAG cars, so your car shouldn't have one. However you can never rule out the possibility that someone has fitted one in the past.

You may something which shows up as an aux heater with VCDS. My dad's Audi has one and the cabin in his heats up a lot quicker than mine.

I think all audi's and most vw's have them   but they only switch on at approx. -4' C  it's on the water outlet beneath the tandem pump  2 or 3 "plugs"   the in car electric heater is in the ac unit when fitted
