Welcome.

How do the two compare?

Hi and welcome aboard.

Hi, very different.. The tdi has the edge in terms of quality and spec.. I loved it, drive sensibly and it returned 54mpg.. Drive swiftly and still high 40's.. Unfortunately the car had an annoying list of faults.. Starting with blue smoke on idle ( turbo oil seal I thought ) . Sills starting to rust.. And after a week rattle when clutch depressed a couple of inches.. I replaced duel mass/ clutch etc.. But having spent money fixing this issue I simply lost the love for it. The mk1 felt slow when I test drove it.. But I've never been a big fan of diesels ( vrs tdi being my second.. First was a sri cdti xpack astra ) so was keen to make the trade.. Having had the vrs petrol for a couple of weeks I can honestly say that I prefer it .. Yes the tdi was newer and more economical.. Yes it went well.. But on reflection the mk1 now feels more usable in terms of performance .. I love the look, the interior is cool.. And the spool up and on boost noise is great when compared to the tractor like noise of the pd engine.. I won't go back t.o diesel.. Don't do massive mileage and the 1.8 t engine seems strong and reliable.. I guess if I'd looked harder to find a better example of he tdi I would of been happier .. But at 35 and having mainly had petrol performance cars it's a more natural choice for me..
