Synthetic Oils

Featured Replies

A few years ago one oil company's T.V. advert campaign once stated "Oils ain't Oils." How true that is, however, how much do we know about synthetic oils and how is the performance of one oil compared with another? I must admit to an interesting journey of educational discovery during my research, which brings me to suggesting you take a look at the following website, if you are interested.

I am not suggesting you change your habits in respect to oil change periods or recommending one oil in preference to another, but as we all know, knowledge = power!

May the well oiled force be with you!

....and a little knowledge is dangerous. Just go by the manufactures recommendations, VAG have done their homework....

Tend to agree with looby, go with the manufacturer and protect the warranty.

yes, I agree - customer cannot do all the work, it's enough we're testing for them their cars ;)

Can't see what all the fuss is about.

VAG know what they are doing, so follow their recommendations; end of!

And all these changes more often are good aren't in any way sponsored or led by the oil manufacturers are they......

Go with what is stated in your handbook, as I am sorry that page does not tell you anything.

If you are looking for a better explanation on some of these things then look a little closer to home http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/90661-16-important-oil-questions-answered/

The post made by oilman contains a lot of good information :) which I will happily endorse.

I wouldn't be so sure about that though...

at least looking at evolution of their products.

Not quite sure why there is all this repudiation of the OP's link.  It is essentially what the oilman is saying in Jerry's link.

Perhaps no one bothered to read it?

Sure it uses info from an oil packager, but then who has the bucks to find out for themselves?

Most of what is written was common knowledge when I was an  auto engineering student (in the sixties), although synthetics were still some way off then, our chemistry lecturer was speculating about the possibilities...

VAG do indeed make some fine vehicles, but are not infallible, and of course they couldn't have any vested interest in persuading you to use their branded products, with their mark up?

You only need to meet the VW spec.  Even if you use the recommended oil, you can shop around for it

Hi Guys, I have re-read my post and cannot fathom how it sent anyone into a tail-spin. I simply found some interesting information and decided to share it. I didn't event intimate that anyone should do something different to what was already being done. So perhaps conclusions were jumped to. We all have an off day occasionally. Wishing you all a great day and a bonza week!
