Stubborn Codes!

Featured Replies

Hi VCDS Gods, I beg a favour of you.

Today I have spent several hours in the Golf working through the fault codes that have been popping up one after another, after another and so on.

Dash lights included ESP, ABS, AirBag and the car was in a lowered performance mode.

I have sorted the ESP and ABS and airbag, this was a combination of Steering position sensor being a mile out after the rack was changed, I also changed a lateral sensor so this put the car into an ABS test mode, a quick look on Ross Tech, then youtube and off to execute a procedure, this was a stamp on the brake pedal followed by a short drive around a car park steering left then right a few times, this light too was extinguished, so, as you can see, steady progress has been made today and none would have been possible without VCDS.

HOWEVER, before we get too far ahead of ourselves, I may have all the dash lights out but I still have a few error codes that I just can't shift, could be my limited knowledge with the VCDS software or it could be I need to get my hands dirty to resolve the final few issues.

Here are the codes I am having trouble with, I would be very grateful for any assistance in the eradication of them.

 Thanks in advance.

And finally, when I bought the car the VCDS software showed that the odometer was displaying KM's, this was the case as the Golf is a right hand drive import from Holland. I read up on the procedure for showing miles in the odometer and carried it out (I read this on VW Vortex as cars go from Canada (KMH) to USA (MPH) so a simple location change to the UK and what happened?

The V71 motor is an airflow flap motor, on the Octy, it is not an easy job to change, however, you can cycle the flaps in VCDS, and this sometimes clears it - it did on my car.

The haldex code would appear to be a power problem I would have thought - memory is volatile, take away the power and it forgets. Check your live and earth, if they are ok, do you have a spare control unit to try?.

Thanks kentphil1, I will cycle the flaps and see if this rectifies the issue, as for the Haldex, I replaced the whole diff with one from an S3, the original one had mechanical issues so I have a spare controller, will check the connections first.

 Thanks again.

I had the 65535 error code back in 2005 on the same version of Haldex controller fitted to my 2002 Octavia 1.8T 4X4. There were no obvious symptoms that the controller was faulty when driving but it was replaced with a 554D version under warranty.

I have a spare controller, if I plug the car into this I assume the fault should clear?

I mean, leave everything on the car in situ, un plug the cable from the controller and plug the alternative controller in whilst it sits on the floor, then do a scan, should work?

I have no hands on experience of the Haldex system as I own a fwd VRs, but would have thought that provided there is no need for a mechanical connection to be made to the control unit, then your idea above should work. You may have to manually clear the code with VCDS though.

Phil.

You get the memory code in most modules from time. Nothing to worry about.

I would agree, but if I have read James original post correctly, I believe he has already tried to clear these modules, and the codes are persistently coming back, although I could be wrong.

This may help - http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/65535

the memory fault one will always come back, it may stay cleared for a few days but itll always come back

Reading the notes at the base of the ross tech page would tend to reinforce your comments, I myself would not consider the haldex controller a critical system, but others may disagree.

Any dealer techs on here that will say what the dealer position is on units this age with this fault - i.e safe to use as non critical system?

If it is functioning correctly, I would probably ignore it, the V71 motor is far more capable of extracting abuse from you when you come to do it.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I have also had the same comments from my mate at the garage, we know the Haldex is operating as we did some tests on wet grass and all seems to be working, I will clean up the connections and see what happens.

I would do the same. Let us know how things pan out over time.

Will get Castle Combe out the way and have a look at it.
