Smoke?

Featured Replies

Noticed last night after about a 40 min run, whilst on idle, my 08 octavia vrs was smoking  not massively, but not noticed it before. I did another 40 min run today and when i pulled up she was again smoking?? The car has done 100k mostly motorway miles with dealer FSH, any ideas?? Head Gasket??

Petrol or diesel?

What colour smoke?

Cheers

sorry! petrol, white

Sounds like a head gasket to me......

Or condensation now the temperature has been dropping at night

Is it smoke or condensation - does it disappear quickly?

Wouldn't condensation not be present after 40 mins of driving?

well, ive gone to the shops this morning and it was smoking on idle again even on a short journey, was definately white and only stopping at traffic/ideling.  Ive taken it out tonight and no smoke what so ever!!!  Surely if it was head gasket then I would be getting a lumpy missing feeling but she idles fine and ive not lost any coolant!! Im now thinking possibly something to do with the turbo?? seals??? I need to watch my oil consumption but I think its used 1ltr over last 1000 miles?? Am i just reading into this smoke too much?? last thing i want to do is ignore it and then the turbo goes bang!!  any one nay odeas on how to check to see if my turbo seals are ok or will i need to get it booked into a garage??

thanks guys

Book it into a trusted garage.......in the end they will find what the problem is....blue smoke is normally a sign of oil.....I think from what i remember that if you have a tfsi then its classed as normal in skoda's eyes that 1ltr of oil every 1000 miles is consumed.......There are so many different post on the forum about the oil consumption in a tfsi....

Blue smoke = oil burning

Black smoke = excess fuel

White smoke = water vapour.

I always used to find the petrol engines kick out a fair amount of white smoke from start up even when brand new.

There's more than one way for a headgasket to fail too.

If the headgasket had failed between the water jacket and combustion chamber this would lead to excessive white smoke. It'd more than likely also lead to overheating (see on temp gauge) and pressurisation of the cooling system. Quick check would be to open the coolant tank, start the engine up and see if it bubbles excessively. When there's a major failure it erupts.

I know ive just been searching re oil consumption!! Trusted garage ???? is there such a thing anymore!! I spoke to a friend earlier who has a seat leon and he had a similar issue, white smoke on idle, oil consumption etc he took it in and the garage said nothing to worry just vapour, 2 weeks later the turbo blew £1200 to sort......

I've never heard of a head gasket failure on this engine. My guess is the turbo, especially at 100k
