Oil Reduction with Shakey start off.

Featured Replies

Hi all,

New to the forum, but have enjoyed many a good read over the past two years.

First problem : In the past month or so my 98' Oct 1.9TDI has been a bit funny when moving off. It shakes as if it is going to stall until i press the clutch in. Accelerating a little harder seems to stop it but overall when it happens the car feels like its going to shake to pieces.

Second problem: I've just ticked over the 15k mark since the last service and noticed that the oil is below the minimum level. Just to check how much was gone i topped it up and it was about a litre.

So two questions for anyone who might be able to advise...

Is that an acceptable amount of Oil burn for such an old car? ( 225k on the clock ) and could the oil level be linked to the stuttering?

Appreciate any feedback you might have.

Thanks

Steve

Hi there and welcome to the forum, firstly your car is well over due for a service, that would be the first thing i'd do, oil is it's lifeblood, so i guess that could be causing a few problems, shuddering ect.. 15 years old, i would change the dog bone bush and check the engine and gearbox mount to see if they need replacing, maybe a few other bush's aswell..

Beat me to it - SERVICE IT! You're asking for trouble, particularly with the turbo oil pickup.

If it is clattery, maybe a DMF problem?

Else I'd agree dogbone mount may be a good place to start.

Now why didn't i think of the duel mass flywheel, perhaps cause i've got a single mass :S but good shout

Now i'm very confused... I thought 15,000KM was the correct time for a service/oil change? Would have had no problem to do it every 5k if i had known.

Thinking i might have to bring this to the crazy Czech mechanics to fix :(

15000 km is correct. I suspect that others reading your first post like me assumed that 15k meant 15000 miles.

Agree....

A major service changing the engine oil, all the filters and a extensive examination of the underside would be your first port of call. If the flywheel is going, you'll get a clunking noise through your gear changes, but best way to check this would be to sit stationary with the handbrake applied tightly, and bring the clutch up as you would do to pull away in normal circumstances, and if it sounds like a barrel of nails tumbling down the stairs, it's most likely serviced it's time.

Another thing to note is always remember that your service intervals are either 15km/10K or 12 months whichever comes first. The number of people I've had to help out, that have turned around and said "ah but it hasn't done the mileage"  :wall:

Regular servicing is the key, my old 2005 Octavia had 307k miles on it before someone crashed into me an wrote it off, so if you look after the car with regarding servicing the car will keep on ploding along, since i first owned my Skoda back in July of 2010 i haven't thought of going to an other make, maybe an upgrade on the existing model

Yeah sorry, i should have been a little clearer, been awhile since I've had to use miles :P Car gets a service every 15,000KM including all filters etc..

Thanks for the tip for checking the Flywheel, will be a hold my breath moment checking that one.

With a 750km commute on a weekly basis i can safely say its a case of mileage and not time :)

Many thanks for your thoughts guys, much appreciated.
