Featured Replies

Hi chaps

not been around much on the forum recently as i've been diverted with another project.

not much to post just yet as I don't actually have the vehicle yet, but i've just paid the deposit to get this beauty:

It's a 1966 13 Window Deluxe Microbus, currently in California. Should have it in a couple of months and then the fun really starts!

cheers

Rob

Oh my days I'm in love!

Nice splitty.  Should be in good order if from the US.  Probably worth a fair bit too in fully restored / working order.

How does this kind of splitty differ from the ones you see with the fold out windows on the front? :)

cheers. yes its not "rust free" by any means but the panel work it needs is pretty straighforward to fix - chassis is straight/solid which is good.

pop -out "safari" windows were a very rare option but can be retro fitted to any split. mine has side popouts and chrome swage trim and a few other bits and pieces as it's a "deluxe", oh and the extra windows of course (regular kombi just has 11 windows). i'll probably add safari's to mine too at some point but there are higher priorities first.. :)

cheers

Rob

I thought this would be a splitty bulli from the title. I was right.

Nice!

Don't let Oet see this thread, the result may not be pretty. :giggle:

yea not often the case sadly...splittys look good in the pics...till you see how much bondo (filler) the americans shove into every nook and cranny, then there is the damage that shippers always do, make sure you check it over fully at the dock. Watch out for general panel damage and bent tie rod arms (as they use a forklift with a jig to move them under the front end)

watch out for the roof rails, notorious for failing and being bodged with bondo.

Remember norcal has lots of rain like here so vehicles from cali often see rain too.

Bay windows are a better buy imo unless you are spending a lot on a split.

Yep, that's very true. This one has its fair share of rust and I think we're paying an appropriate price based on the condition - we're assuming a considerable amount of panel work required already which is factored in. We're using a specialist shipper company so (famous last words) hopefully they can't do too much damage (wish i hadn't said that now!). I'm also budgeting on replacing most of the suspension.. even if it is straight it's going to be 40 yrs old.

This one appears to be OG paint pretty much all over the top half of the van - lower has had terrible brush painted brown over rusty sills - all of that is coming out anyway. Some hippy also butchered out a vent in the roof and cut out the bulkhead - both of those will be restored to oe spec as part of the refurb.

It's going to be an interesting project :D

yes didn't mean to be too negative, just realistic i guess based on experience.

It does look like a cool van!

Have done a number of vans now and did several last year, the only one that wasn't damaged was the one in my avatar (and as its rat look it wouldn't have mattered on this one anyway)!

when you say specialist..what do you mean specialist?

who are you using?

)!

i'm using a company that specialises in finding and importing type 2s from the usa. I've seen several of the vehicles they've found/imported and i've met up with /chatted to some people who've used them seemingly with good results. We'll see how it pans out..

whos the actual shipper though?

*******s. seller pulled out.

back to square one.

:(

Rob, it may have been for the best you never know.

Mate of mine recently imported a westfalia from the States, fitted a replacement Engine which went, last time I asked him it looked like he may have to go legal on the engine suppliers.

.. thought i'd update this old thread.

After going around the houses with various split window vans and having got to the point of agreeing to buy/paying deposit THREE times only to have it fall through for various reasons we took a break and re-thought our approach.

Cut a long story short we're not now going to take on a project but instead go for a later, usable van that we can start having family camping trips in straight away.

Bought this last night, 1978 Westfalia Berlin "champagne" edition:

:)

Lots of plans of things we'd like to do, but all subject to how much money we can afford at the moment so this might be a long term thing to get exactly as we want, but will still be usable in the mean time.  I'll start a thread on this shortly.

this will be more useable than the split, cost a lot less to run and get parts for drive better and be slightly less nickable!
