New DE headlight question.

Featured Replies

I have been fiddling....... with my headlights, and was playing with the lever for changing the beam pattern. I don't know why I did it but now I can't remember if the lever should be in the up or down position.

Does any body know if the small lever should be at the highest or lowest position?

Feeling very day at the moment!

It should be at 0 so the highest position for the lights.

You then only need to lower them (higher number on the dial) if you have some weight in the back of the car.

Thanks Phil

The dial is set to 0. I'm ok with that and what to do when I have a full car. My question is about the lever inside the headlight housing. If you remove the rubber cover to access the headlight bulb there is s small lever of the the left as you look at it just next to the bulb. This changes the beam pattern when you drive abroad, it has nothing to do with the height of the beam.

I just can't remember if that lever was up or down in the first place. ....oops

Park it facing a wall or garage door, turn on headlights to dip. You should see a flat top to the beam and approx 30-45deg upward bit at the left side of the beam (looking at the wall). This is the UK setting. The other setting will give a totally flat dip beam or the upward bit will be on the right.

It is a very well defined beam pattern so you shouldnt have a problem checking it.

That's great advice xman. I always see the flick when I'm facing the wall so I know which way it usually kicks off to.

Excellent explanation, even I can follow those!

Thank you.

I know I shouldn't ask but why were you fiddling............with that particular part of your headlights?

Pure curiosity. I heard there was a switch there and I just had to flick it and see exactly what it did to the beam. Not sure what I expected. ... maybe the whole beam to shift the other way or something but all I heard was a little click and nothing else.

It was a kind of 'big red button do not press' moment. ...... lesson learnt!

Jonro - that sounds like the kind of lever I had on my Octavia - they flicked it on collection (Germany) for "travel mode" and reverted it when I got back to the UK.

I asked before in here whether there was sucha thing for the Monte, got a resounding NO, fit the crappy stickers.  Next time I'll fiddle with the rubber covers and check!

It definitely exists on the monte, and it should be in the raised position for the UK.

So to travel to Europe, do you push it into the down position?

  • Author

If you push the lever down, which is to the left of the headlight bulb as you face it, the beam is flattened. I've checked this as suggested by @xman and it does work.

Jonro, any chance of a picture of the lever?

I only have the roller switch to change the beam height.

Cheers.

Paul.

Never mind, just reread the thread, lever is in the headlight housing.

Away to do my nosey now!!

Paul.

I wouldn't be able to get a shot of it, sorry.

You can only feel the edge of the lever rather than the wider part. It's a little stubborn the first time. It also appears like nothing had happened but if the lights are on when you do it (the lever doesn't get hot) and you have identified the 'kick off' point of the beam on the wall ahead you will see a difference.
