small car, big boot, cheap to run. recommendations please

Featured Replies

My other half needs a new car, looking to pay around £2500. Want something that is reliable, cheap to run, prefably cheap or no road tax 4 doors small but needs a boot you can put a pram in. Any recommendations?

Mk1 Octy or Fabia?

Pretty decent value for money.

at that kind of money you may struggle to get a car with low tax.

Roomster?

Honda Jazz -the magic seats are seats are something else. You'll get something quite reasonable for that money.

Aspman that's why I have just traded in my vrs fabia for an Octavia because pram wouldn't fit in easily enough lol

Good call on the Jazz IMO.

EDIT, re post #5,

are you going to go to an Estate car then if space is one of the major requirements.

Just as an easy way of looking at choices,

Go to £3000 Asking Prices and look at what is coming up in the area you are looking,

select on mileage, age or whatever its going to be to get to what you want

Left field but I had a Hyundai Accent saloon recently on holiday and that swallowed our big pram easily. Not seen many about here though.

On a similar line a Cordoba or polo saloon might do the trick. Not likely to get low tax though, as noted.

Not sure I'd want such a leggy Jazz. Isn't servicing pricey on the DISI?

Peugeot 206 1.4 HDI. You could get an Estate for that money, but the hatch has a decent boot too.

64 mpg combined, £30/year road tax and reasonably reliable for a French car.

I'd go for the Fabia as it has the biggest boot.

Again for the 206 estate, although not my first choice. Friend at work just got one, 54plate for £2300

Wouldn't be my first choice either, but If I wanted motoring on a shoestring it's what I'd get.

My sister ran a 206 1.4 HDI to 130,000 miles with hardly any problems and minimal maintenance (it went 30,000 miles without an oil change). They also still look quite good for their age.

My 2000 Octy tdi is a thrifty motor to be fair, huge boot, reliable, well equipped, 60mpg (motorway mind) tax is a little steep but ultimately there's loads of them around, capable of mega miles and there's some real tidy ones for not much wedge.

Provided you don't mind getting a bad back.  The driving position is bl**dy awful.  Nothing lines up so you are sitting twisted all the time.

Fabia SDI estate or Octy SDI estate.
