fabia1 vrs gearshift issue. starting to lose the plot!

Featured Replies

Before I require some mental assistance with this motor I thought I had better ask some advice first.

All I want is it to run right. No mods nothing but ut's arguing with me all the way.

Gears kept jamming or missing 1st and 2nd or reverse. Did the shifter calibration and discovered one of the legs on the cable ends was missing. Ordered 2 new ones(not specifically for my motor but fitted and work fine), and did the calibration routine but the front locking pin on the gearbox won't turn fully upwards when I push it in and turn it while moving the selector on the box up and down. I then resorted to the put it gear method and seems to work fine but then it starts doing the same thing after a few changes.

My wife is on the verge of refusing to drive it now as it keeps happening when she is taking the kids to school.

Any ideas? DMF(surely it would.do it all gears)? Something stuck or broken under the gear stick?

I am at a loss.

Alroght mate, sorry don't have a clue about your issues but when I did he recalibrate one if my cable end holders was slipping. (god know what they are called)

How do you got them? Any special tools needed? Don't suppose you have the part no.s and cost do you?

It depends what age the motor is. Mine is a 54 plate which they said need entirely new cables at £37.50 each but come with new ends. I bought just the cable ends which were for a newer year I believe but it hasn't worked.

I need to check whether the cable end isn't gripping when the thing locks up, and if it is I'll need to bite the bullet and spend the 75 quid. It had better work. The cable ends themselves were only about 15 quid each new.

Best net is to phone tps or local vag parts specialist and tell them you need new gear selector cable ends and they will keep you right. As for fitting, I think it is circlips or something similar from memory. Only took the boys at the garage an hour or so to change. Biggest hassle is getting the battery box and stuff out. All my bolts are rusted solid.

Cheers

Ah right. Mines a 04, so pretty much same. Battery box ain't an issues as I've had it put a few times, and got it down to a fine art. Thanks for the info, ill try to nip into a dealer and explain what I need.

Well if the dealer comes in too expensive or whatever trade parts specialist will have it. Wasn't the cheapest I found but they had them in stock.

Cheers. Not had anything to do with TPS before as they only deal.with trade so.I believe, so will price dealers up and takeit.from there.

If.anyone has replaced these bits and wants to share how/what you need, please feel.free!!

Well I have redone the gear shift calibration and again it was fine for a few corners, but when I got back home and dropped it into first to pull into the drive, it jammed in first again.

I was originally wondering whether it is the DMF/Clutch or the selector arm on top of box wearing out, but now I am wondering if it is possibly an engine/gearbox mounting that has let go, so that when you hit the brakes and drop it a gear it shunts forward a bit.  Does that make sense to anyone?

I bought this car as a fixer upper, but I am now running out of cash.

Cheers

When you have it in first and the clutch is down does it still feel like it wants to move/ feels like the clutch isn't fully disengaged?

If so it will be the release bearing/ slave cylinder

Heavily worn clutch? Worn gearbox internals?

Well I very much doubt it, because the flexible gear change cables would move with the engine and gearbox, thus making no alteration to the adjusters.

Hokey Cokey.

I know this is old but I thought I would update.  Its sorted.  Found another post on the site with very similar issues to mine and the two chaps it had happened both discovered the DMF had seized, and replacing it sorted it.  I didn't tell the garage what the issue was, just dropped it off with a new clutch, dmf and slave cylinder. What a pain in the padded ass that was getting the right one.  If you ever get this problem, and the place asks you whether it is the LSUK or the Sachs clutch, on mine it didn't matter, as I changed everything, mine switched from a sachs to an LSUK, and the set up came with different sized bolts(well it didn't but it was supposed to which just added to the confusion and is very important or it won't fit).

Garage couldn't believe it when they took it off and the dmf was seized, never came across one that had done that before, so an education for all concerned.

Gearbox is now working like a dream.  Thanks to all for the suggestions and input it was greatly appreciated.
