Replacing a tie rod

Featured Replies

My passenger side tie rod (not rod end) has a tiny amount of play so could do to be changed in the near future.

I'd rather not take the boot off to check until I have to, so has anyone done this before? Do you need a special tool to crack the nut or will a standard spanner reach?

Thanks in advance!

Special tool or craw foot spanner I'm afraid mate.

I managed it with some mole grips

That's a pain, ok cheers guys.

It's quite an easy job though!

I once used mole grips on my first fabia years ago so it is possible.

Yeah I'll give it a go. I'm sure I can knock some kind of tool up for it. If not, I bet a garage works out cheaper than buying the special tool!

I'd quote about £80.

New trackrod end, new tie rod and tracking done.

Wedge splitter about £6.99 or a screw one £10 at machine mart ( www.machinemart.co.uk

). Screw one is better if you ever need to split a joint to repair something else . I'd hesitate to re use a joint after using a wedge splitter as it can damage the boot .

Easily reached with a spanner, move the steering wheel till it becomes accessible. Took me 10 mins to do mine lol.
