Brodit active phone cradle installed - where to route cable?

Featured Replies

Finally got around to installing a Brodit active iPhone cradle:

I like the position of it and that it charges the phone when in situ.

I'm not sure about the location of the cable or the effect it has on the metal effect trim (bulges out a bit). The cable is routed down the side of the Bolero to it's own fuse behind the dash - keeping the lighter socket free and no dangling wires.

Ideally the cable would not interfere with the metal effect trim but would still be discreet.

How has everybody else dealt with this? Any good tips / suggestions?

My cradle is the other side of my Bolero with the unit being level with the volume control.

The cable is then tucked up the back of the cradle, and into the dash. Looks much more tidy.

Although I did hound the engineer to do this when he fitted.

It would be a bit far away for me like that. I use the sat nav and have to use the phone to skip tracks when streaming over A2DP because the BT module doesn't support AVRCP 1.3 (no skip, stop or track details on the Bolero). So it would be a bit of a stretch and the display touch points wouldn't be as easy for me to hit successfully whilst keeping an eye on the road.

The location of the phone cradle is about right for me (though it does appear to create interference via the speakers when polling the server sometimes) but the cable is a bit annoying as is!

Given the location, I don't think there is anything else you can do with the cable, although would be interested to see a pic from a different angle to see the bracket setup.

Can't think of anything you could do either - that position doesn't give you many options (can understand why you've chosen it though).

I too have a Brodit mount in the same position. I have taken the lead back through the vent and out at the first join in the duct where there is a nice thick layer of foam. A bit of a faff to get the lead through the shutters on the vent but tidy once done.

Vent would be possible, but yes - fiddly. Only other thing would be to modify (drill a small hole) in either the dash surround or the corner of the top box....

I did something similar with an active mount in a similar position on my Fabia, but there was a row of buttons underneath the central vents, so I just bought a new one and then drilled a hole through for the cable. It wasn't visible with the cradle in place.

Have you got a photo of that? I had considered feeding it through the vent too but wasn't sure how it would end up!

I'm hoping to achieve it with minimal damage if possible. I did read your post on what you did to the Fabia whilst researching my options. Great idea!

The flat cable is a great idea

But think the vent idea has legs! Did think about that on the Fabia, but the vent design didn't lend itself - the Octy one should be better.

I have exactly the same holder in exactly the same place, except mirrored because LHD.

I wedged the cable inbetween the center stack and the dashboard panel below the steering column. From there i continued to tuck it in between the carpet and the panel around the gearshift, and from there on to the lighter socket.

I put the cable between the trim under the steering wheel and centre console. I will try and do photo.

Photos of all these solutions appreciated!! Sounds like a whole bunch of great options.

Metblackrat - how did you route the cable via the top box? Through a vent or under it somehow?

Trundlenut - I had considered that method but thought it left quite a bit of expose cable. Looking for a more stealth like solution if possible!

He top box just pops out if you prise it with some trim tools or table knives. Just prise it up from the bottom edge and unclip the hazard switch when you can reach it. It leaves loads of space to run wires.

I assume that it won't go back on flush due to a wire being under it though? What does it look like? Do you have a photo where the wire goes in?

I did think about cutting a notch into the trim surrounding the radio directly under the clip but I couldn't be bothered in the end.

Just to give you a different take on things - this is my cradle in the Superb:

Looks tidy. Where does the power cable go? Not a lot of space between the stereo and the surround for it there. Is the cable quite flat?

Have a close look at the third picture in the link.

Thanks. Cables go Into the back of the Bolero - dedicated wiring kit for car phone. Luckily the cable runs up behind the facia for the Bolero (there is a step at the bottom where the aircon controls are). As a result, the facia isn't compromised.
