Selling your octavia vrs, trade? Or private? Which is best?

Featured Replies

So I'm coming to the era where I'm away to sell my vrs, however, the more I think about it - the more I'm unsure how I'm going to do this, pay the car off and sell it privately or to trade it in and take the hit on it (I've been offered 8500 for it from a Volvo dealership)

Is there actually people out there who would pay money for such a car, I'm thinking about the region of £9000 for mine, but I really don't think in this climate people have that money to buy a car straight out, it's a fl vrs in race blue, 59k miles on a 10 plate, would a car like this shift for that sorta money privately?

Or am I wrong?

Try it on here first, but selling cars privately can be tricky.

Is it a diesel or petrol?

It will sell but it depends how long you are prepared to wait...

It's a petrol, tsi engine (so the better of them :p)

See.. For me to pay it off I'd be taking a bank loan to pay it off then once cars sold, pay off said loan - mainly the reason for the thread, I'd rather have a fair price for my car than to take a massive loss on it just after new year which is the sort of area I will be looking to selling at

you'll get more money privately but as above, you will have to wait and be prepared to drop your price too.

You will never get its private sale value from a dealer, they have to make profit afterall. But you get the cash there and then.

If there is finance on it there is no point trying to sell it privately before its paid off. You'd loose loads on it,

My recent experiences suggest there are not a lot of people out there with the cash, so you have to be prepared to wait for a private sale.

Good luck.

also, most people spending that money will prefer to buy via a dealer (be it main dealer or just a sales garage) for the piece of mind that they can go back if there are any issues.

You dont say

How old or milage so it would be difficult for people to comment

Private. There are people out there. I have bought all my cars for "cash". A friend recently paid 12k for an 02 plate land rover defender privately.

Give it a go.

Your likely to get more from a private sale but as above unless your lucky it could take some time and can be a PITA with timewasters etc and the tsi vRS will be a bit of a niche market. Don't forget you'll have advertising costs too

You'll get more trade in from a skoda main dealer rather than another marque as they can sell your car on for more because people looking for a 3 year old vRS are more likely to go to a Skoda main dealer.

You could also try the webuyanycar.com lot to see what they'll give you

You could also become a freedom member and advertise it here privately

good luck

I bought my vRS for cash a couple of months ago, from a main dealer @ £15k.

But was going to buy (cash again) a 10 plated Leon FR with 14k miles (CR170) for £10.5k, until the deal got messed up and that was private.

People do have money for the right motor if they are looking for it and saved for it like I did.

Must admit I would not buy any car privately with finance on it, it must be clear of all debt. So worth getting it cleared before you advertise.

Buying White 60 plate 2010 Octy Vrs at the weekend for cash..... 39k on clock for touch over £9k, think I have got a good deal

I generally always sell my cars privately rather than trade them in. Often the difference between trade in value and private sale value is considerable, and makes it well worth giving it a try. As an example my last sale was a 2004 Chrysler Voyager. I was offered £1750 trade in for it and I sold it privately for £3300.

Obviously a long MOT is a must when selling privately.

For the sake of £ 500 I'd trade it in.

But for others reading this from a search:

I recently sold our other car for £ 4,000 privately that I had been offered £2,200 trade in. I spent 4 hours cleaning and polishing then took quality photos on a sunny day, listed online honestly including very minor damage and scanned the service history book. For asking price I would include roof bars and 1/2 a tank of petrol

Advertising experience:

£ 50 at auto trader and nothing but time wasters and spammers

£ 17 at ebay motors 2 buyers fighting as to who could get here first - Sold to 1st chap who said "hold it" I'll come to lok with deposit tomorrow. "nd chap said damm if buter 1 doesn't like or haggles down I will come round and make counter offer.

£ 0 Gumtree  - Only spammers from nigeria

£ 0 Friday ad - More spammers

The buyer paid £4 for the HPI check and phoned the garage that had done the servicing recently (as I'd included a photo of service book. 3 x Main steeler and 5 x Indy) as part of his research. Arrived with cash and after extended test drive paid full ask.  I handed over a file with every receipt from new - proving the mileage and service history as well as the reassurance that I look after my cars.

Paper trail sells 2nd hand cars privately so advertise this.

Buyer send me a text a few weeks later to say thanks. I'd wager he took it to his local garage and paid an hours labour saying give this a look over.

Sell the car as if you are the buyer.

I bought my vrs off a guy that is on here. I saw his eBay ad, called, had a good chat, seemed a genuine guy the car had fssh and low miles and the spec I wanted.

I left a deposit over the phone with him then travelled half the country to pick it up without seeing it in person.

The deal was done and I drove it home.

Fair enough that was a good experience but don't say people won't pay cash for a 10k car. I did.

Try it for a couple of weeks first on eBay, you might be surprised.

If you can live with it keep it & pay off more of the loan, whenever you change a car it costs money, if the 10 plate if feeling old spend 250 on a private plate

If you are worried about reliability look at an extended warranty

Ive got a 10 plate Scout now on a private plate, 93000 miles, 2 year expended warranty,  that will see 150000 plus before it goes

You'll probably not profit much from buying off the finance and selling on. The residuals are quite weak on the TSi's, also no offence intended but a 10 plate at 59k miles I would consider to be getting on the wrong side of miley.

I'd suggest you either buy it with the view of keeping it a while longer (given you probably couldnt buy the same car retail for what is owing on the baloon) or trade it and push for a strong part-ex.

I don't think you read it properly then.

And also referring to some comments the car won't have hpi on it when I sell it private
