Charging for diagnostics at service

Featured Replies

The JPS Octavia has suffered two occasions recently when it went into limp mode, once when the engine light appeared on the dash, and once when the coil indicator showed

I logged them on VCDS and cleared the fault codes, knowing that it was going in today for a service, including the dreaded 4 year cambelt change (so I'm expecting a bill of at least £475)

I asked if they'd check for any other faults, and was informed that a diagnostic check would be another £69.95!!!!!!

Am I being unreasonable in thinking that a general service should include a check as to whether or not there are any faults which need rectifying, and then alert me if there are?

I can do a VCDS scan in less than 5 minutes, and I am technically inept, so why they should be able to charge that much for a diagnostic check when the car is already in for a service is beyond me

:(

I think they are extracting the urine.

Tell them you'll take your business elsewhere if they are going to charge you for that.

I think they charge it because they can. They presume a lot of drivers don't have a clue or even own VCDS.

Seconded; Any place I've gone treats checking fault memories as part of even an oil service.

They aren't doing the service to Skoda spec then. Makes you wonder if they are cutting any other corners.

That's outrageous! I thought that my nearest independent charging £36 was bad enough! Kwik Fit even include it in their service packages! My girlfriend has just had her Kia Picanto serviced by them and they did a diagnostics scan and found a fault code, didn't charge extra for it.

£69.95 is "cheap" going on reports I have heard what places charge to plug you in.

Thanks

Everyone seems to be saying what I was hoping to hear

I can imagine some form charge being made out of service, but not actually st service, since they should be checking for faults anyway

It was on the vw service list near the top of work I was agreeing to all covered under service price.

I'd show them the skoda page.

There's a world of difference between doing diagnostics and simply reading fault codes.  They should be reading the codes as part of the service but doing actual diagnostics (carrying out further tests to confirm the cause of the fault) takes extra time and is not part of the service.  For £70 I'd expect rather more than a fault code read, I'd expect to get the benefit of the technicians training and experience for that.

Ask them if they know the difference between plugging the computer in and diagnosing car problems?
