I'm looking to get either a Connects2 or X Carlink unit for my car. I want to maintain the standard look of the dash (ie no aftermarket stereo)

I have an iPhone 5 and all the above devices seem to only come with the 30pin connector, meaning I'd need the lightening adaptor to use my iphone 5.

My question is, if I got the USB unit instead of the iPod unit would I be able to use my original Apple cable that came with my phone to charge/play my music? Or would it be charge only?

Anyone else had an issue like this? I don't really like the idea of the lightening adaptor but if that is my only option it will have to do.

It would be charge only. Unfortunately, the lightning cable doesn't support audio playback. However with the adapter, it would work!
