Skoda A5, 2007 make: Fuel gauge trouble

Featured Replies

My fuel guage started to drop to zero when I am driving and I have around 3/4 of the tank full and when I switch the car off and start it again it works for a while and then drops again. After a couple of days it dropped to zero and now won't move at all now.

Any ideas ?

I had problems on my VRS estate 2008. It was covered under warranty. After taking loads of readings with the tank at several levels of fuel, they first changed the sender unit fitted to the pump in the tank, worked for a while. Then they changed the pump, sender unit complete. Worked for a while, then they changed the plug on top of the pump in the tank. Been fine ever since. If you need a tank sender unit, might be able to help. There are some fiddly little connectors on the sender unit but it comes with a tool for this.

Thank you for your reply. Today I refuelled and the gauge showed full but my guess is once the fuel goes lower it will stop working again. What I understand from your post is that you are not sure what exactly was the cause of the problem, am I correct ?.

do you have a photo of the tank sender ?

I think the sender unit was originally faulty but in all their efforts on removing/refitting the plug tg small connections became lose and resulting in faulty readings. I have enclosed picture of sender unit. I would check the plug on top of the pump first. Be careful removing, small tab has to be released to remove plug. Worth a fiddle before entering any deeper. Hope this helps.post-75867-0-83999100-1379867565_thumb.jpgpost-75867-0-58383800-1379867633_thumb.jpgpost-75867-0-83999100-1379867565_thumb.jpg

I could only open the box photo but not the other one. Do you know how to access the fuel tank and the send unit ?. How much does it cost in the UK, am in Egypt :)

Pump unit is located under rear o/s seat. Lift the rear seat and you will find it. Held in by lock ring but no need to remove that if your checking plug. Sent picture again.post-75867-0-98518800-1379869251_thumb.jpg

Sender unit about £50 ish and from memory the pump ( inc sender ) was £240. Didn't take to much notice of prices as it was a warranty job.:)

Hi there,

It has been a while and I was busy and the gauge was partially working until it is quarter full. Now it doesn't work at all and I asked the dealership here and they said the sender costs around 100 GBP not including installation. I tried to take the unit out myself and see if I can clean it with WD-40 or such but I was unable to unlplug the ocnnector on top of the tank, any ideas ?

Happy new year
