Timing chain

Featured Replies

Hi guys can anyone recommend a good cheap mechanic in the Birmingham area to change a timing chain on a 1.4mpi fabia? Needs doing ASAP as it's gettin really noisy now and it's annoying me. Been quoted about 200 through a mate including parts and labour not sure if that's a good or bad price.

Thanks in advance

Yup very good price for parts and labour

Haha, I have an MPI as well. They are certainly no ball of fire are they. I'm getting used to staying in the inside lane of motorways :giggle:

By the way, the chains can rattle like mad but I've never ever heard of one snapping. It was the same with the old Estelles and Rapids.

Hi, we've been running a 1.4mpi for around 4 years & although it's not that responsive until you get in the right rev range it's been a damn good reliable little car! Ours has just over 90k on the clock & the chain remains, touch wood, relatively quiet at the moment.

How many miles has yours covered as the timing chain replacement interval is quoted at around 120k. Bear in mind that noisy chains can still do an awful lot of miles & I can testify to that in older models! Around £200 all in is a decent price for this & may be worth considering if the intention will be to extend your ownership? ;)

Just ticked over 112k but it's been rattling since I bought the car last year and hav covered 10k since then but just seems to be getting louder and the fuel consumption is gettin worse so I'm thinking it needs doing

I wouldn't bother, you will gain next to nothing. Your best bet would be to shed some weight. Run it to the ground, get your no claims up then get a VRS or monte.
