Shock absorber advice for mk1 vrs.

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

I have a vrs estate and sadly the suspension has taken a bit of a beating over the past year. My journey to work is 12 miles down a mixture of horrendous country lanes, with huge amounts of pot holes and uneven roads. Sadly living in the middle of no where means I don't have an alternative route. Due to wear, I recently replaced the FARB bushes for poly bushes and also the drop links. I am also replacing the 18 inch audi wheels for a set of 16 inch original spiders in the hope that will give the suspension a bit more room to play.

I have an MOT due in a couple of months and noticed my front N/S shock absorber has a slight leak. Firstly I would like to know if this would result in a failure, and secondly what is a good but cost effective replacement? Sadly cash is a bit tight as I have a baby on the way. I don't want to spend loads, but equally I don't want to replace with something that will last all of 2 minutes.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Tom

I ****ed about with this / that  aftermarket shocks and springs when my VRs was getting vague and floaty at 90,000 miles.

Like you, I just wanted qualty replacements that gave me nice, tight handling but with every-day, real-world compliance for normal roads.

After a lot of wasted cash, and weekends up and down on ramps trying different products, do you know what I found was the best solution in terms of cost and results?

A set of standard replacement Sachs shocks and springs from my friendly, local Skoda main dealer...

They're not that expensive, and it re-inforced the truth to me that manufacturers don't spend millions of pounds on research and development, and selecting the best parts for all-round use, for nothing!
