6 Paddle Clutch & DMF from CG Motorpsorts

Hi all,

Firstly, apologies as I know there's loads of stuff on here about clutches and flywheels from CG Motorsports. I just need your opinion on this particular setup.

I'm thinking of buying the 6 paddle clutch and a standard DMF as that's what they've recommended.

I have a remap on the Fabia running at 170bhp and around 340lbs torque. I use my car for commuting about 40 miles per day with a mixture of busy A roads and motorway driving. I'm planning on keeping the car hopefully another 3 years or so. I don't intend to gain any more power or use it for track days, as I rely on my car for commuting to work.

What's your thoughts on purchasing this setup from CG Motorsports?

I think 340ft/lbs dont sound right with just a remap to 170bhp.

With just a map though you should be fine with a dmf and uprated clutch, thats if your 340 (I expect predicted figure) is around 300ft/lbs.

You really need to drive a car with a paddle clutch in to see what you think.

 

But from my experience with them in road cars they are a pain!

 

You do realise you cannot slip a paddle clutch when taking up drive?

They are either on or off.

So not nice in traffic when multiple stop/starting is taking place!

 

At your power a uprated normal clutch, not a paddle clutch would be fine and much nicer on your daily drive :)

I've driven a paddle clutch and is definitely as described above. I would say if your keeping it with just a map go for a new standard clutch if yours is slipping?

What Jase and Phil B have mentioned above a paddle clutch will be too much to live with day to day.

What's it like mate in traffic? Have you just adjusted your driving style? Everyone keeps saying they're not very good in traffic jams. What can be so bad about them?

Unfortunately it was a harsh map from Awesome GTI. I put the car on a few different rollers to check the figures and they were spot on. Originally it was 177bhp with 355lbs of torque, but I couldn't cope with the black smoke, so they de-tuned it slightly. Too much torque really!

Anyway people keep talking about the Sachs organic clutch with a DMF. What's your thoughts mate?

Its not the nightmare everyone makes them out to be - you soon get used to how it bites which is maybe a bit more aggressive than a standard clutch.

 

Must admit when someone else gets in the car for the first time (ie mechanics when it goes for service) they all stall it straight away but once you've driven it a bit it feels quite normal.

 

I don't even get much chatter like most and none of my passengers have ever remarked on it (even the other half!!) so it cant be noticeable.

 

MInd you could have anything less with 420 lb/ft torque  :happy:

Get the cg dual friction clutch,its a hybrid clutch they make,paddle on one side and organic on the other.

That sounds expensive! I am hoping to keep the bill down to under a £1k fitted, as the Mrs will go mad!

My only concern now is, if you stall it say hitting traffic after you exit a motorway, the turbo needs time to cool down. Will it not damage the turbo as I've been told to warm up and cool down it properly? Cheers mate

I dont think its anymore than the 6 paddle kit mate, I got the full kit and single mass flywheel and got it fitted aswell for less than 900 :)

if youve been "cruising" on the motorway the turbo wont have been under much load anyway. .and if you stalled it,in the time youve restarted the engine,the turbo wont have stopped spinning anyway,so aslong as you get it started back up and the oil supply back to it streight away itd be fine..

As for turbo "cooldown" a minute should be fine, just so the oil gets time to circulate while the turbos not underload.

I drive a 6 paddle CG as a daily drive and dont find it any problem? It is a bit grabby and quite on/off but nothing that bad. Really dont know why people get so funny about them?

Interesting to have found this thread. When I collected my Mk1 VRS about 18 months ago it came with a receipt for one of these clutches from CG Motorsport. Now, I don't mind the 'on' or 'off' style clutch, I've kinda got used to it, but I do find the biting point either at the bottom of the pedal range, or right at the top. It's never at the same place, and to be honest, in 1st gear it can start biting with the pedal fully pressed.

 

Incidentally, and it may be connected, but putting the car into first gear can take some effort sometimes. I'm fairly sure it may not be due to the clutch and this thread, but thought I'd put it up here in case anyone had any thoughts on this issue.

Yet more stifling feedback for CG....   :think:

Used to have an Escort Mexico with a Gp4 engine back in the early 80's, fair bit of power not a great load of torque.

Had a Bullit gearbox and paddle clutch, and my recollection is it was a total pain, sounded like a tractor and drove like one until 'on cam', the paddle clutch was either in or our (on or off) and not what I'd want for a daily drive again.

Different era, different car, I know, but a paddle clutch in a Fabia really wouldn't float my boat unless I was wanting big bhp & torque.

I'd ask if they have a demo car with one in, or can put you in touch with a customer who has had one fitted to a Fabia before I commit if I were you....

Lol they not much use putting you in touch with other members with them fitted.

I'd still ask the question, as surely (sorry, I shouldn't call you that!) they will have fitted similar or same to some VAG product?

If not, try posing the question on IbizaOC, LeonOC or SeatCupra.net , as I'm sure someone will have had experience of one.
