Tyre/wheel help.

Featured Replies

I'm replacing my 17" zenith wheels with 18x8 et51 wheels and 235/40 R18 tyres. Can anyone confirm this setup will be ok on the vRS?

235/40-18 tyres will be raising the overall gearing a little (1.7%) as the correct tyres on 18" wheels are 225/40-18.  235/35-18 would lower the overall gearing by 2%.

I will leave others to comment whether there are any fouling issues.

A quick check on WillTheyFit reveals:

http://www.willtheyfit.com/index.php?width=225&aspect=45&diameter=17&wheelwidth=7&offset=51&width2=235&aspect2=40&diameter2=18&wheelwidth2=8&offset2=51&Submit=Submit

So because the wheel width is wider at 8J, over the current 7J width of the OEM 17" vRS wheel, this will make matters worse with that tyre width choice. As you're maintaining the same offset as the existing wheel and the mounting point is obviously static, you'll have 1/2" more wheel inset towards the suspension component, and the same out in the arch.

As discussed in your Wanted thread for the 235 tyres, I think you'll see rubbing issues, particularly at the front with larger amounts of lock applied. I don't see a reason to stray from 225/40/18 on that wheel. On your traction issue, I would look at a grippier and more performance orientated tyre, than you run now.

1/2" shouldn't be too bad surely?

I'm currently running new pilot sport 3 front tyres, I'm pretty sure they're a decent spec tyre.

I need Harry to chime in, I'm sure he's run a similar setup.

Just highlighting that, combined with a wider tyre.

PS3s are good yes - do you have WALK fitted, and upgraded bushes as well?

Look forward to seeing a pic when they are on

I have Audi S3 solid console bushes fitted. I think it's more a case of too much torque with the K04 turbo.

This site puts the new tyres at a total of 0.4" wider than the old wheel setup

http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp

It states at the bottom

"Suspension Assuming that this is OEM wheel/tire and there is no any problems with clearance on both sides >>> Package is 5 mm (0.2'') closer to suspension/brakes components. Acceptable for most cars.

Fenders Package will stick out 5 mm (0.2'') farther. Acceptable for most cars.

Wheelwells Will fill out the wheelwell by extra 6 mm. Acceptable for most cars."
