Hi all,

      I just wanted to post a quick info gathering in the Forum before i send my Mature lady to the scrap yard....

 

I purchased a Skoda Octavia (abt 260,000 miles on the clock now) from a fourcourt in Doncaster....(never again!!) the car had some serious issues with it, broken springs, hydrolic fluid in the Brake system, washers padding gaps for bolts in the brake calipers.. you name it and it was a death trap!! "Family Safe Car the sales man said" but thats another story.

 

I had the Brakes checked & fixed, the belt and water pump changed, overall service (oil/air/filters/plugs) and the car was running like a dream. Over the last few weeks we noticed a change in the Clutch that then effected the brakes. On taking it to the garage  we found that the cylinder behind the clutch needed to be replaced and so we did. This resolved all issues and drove like a charm, this week the clutch dropped to the last 2" and this morning was taken into the garage (pre booked) fluid in the drivers well and finally no clutch.

 

The mechanic today tried again to blead the system but it will not!

 

So the questions i have are:-

  • Would the Hydrolic fluid in the system cause serious degredation to the washers/Seals throught out the whole system?
  • Is it cost prohibative to replace the complete system on the car?
  • If i could get "Support" would it be worth while in replacing this to give the old girl some life?

 

I wonder if your mechanic used the old pump the pedal to bleed the system? If he did that's why it won't bleed. On these cars you need to bleed the system with an easybleed type unit or the seals collapse.

BTW there are two bleed nipples on the master cylinder. IIRC you should bleed the lower one first.

Sounds like the clutch master cylinder has gone caput as you say you have fluid in the footwell.

Was it a new one you has installed or a used one.

HI all,

     Thanks for the Amaising responce. The cylinder that was replaced was done with a new cylinder. I am not 100% sure what was replaced but i trust the mechanic (but people can make mistakes).

 

just an FYI once the last part was changed the feed back on the clutch was VERY strong, it would come back up with a strong return (not too sure if that helps to ID the last part that was changed.

 

As for the mulitple nipples - i know that the clutch was working after he changed the cylinder (does that mean that it was initially setup correct and the bleeding was done right?)

 

He said that he thinks this is now the Master Cylinder that could have gone but due to the "Steering fluid" that was initially found in the brake/clutch system he seems to think that all the seals could be done for! he is being cautious as he doesnt want an ever ending ammount of cash to be thrown at it.
