Oil filter change on a 1.4l 16v (BBY)

Featured Replies

Hi guys!

No marks on oil and/or oil filter change since last big service (summer of 2010) so I guess it's about time now. I've been looking for the oil filter, but can't find it. I have the Haynes manual, but it only covers 1.2/1.4l MPI models, and 1.4/1.9l diesel models. On these machines, the oil filter seems to be quite easy, sitting on the side of the engine.

Now, today I went to our nearest DIY station, where I pumped up the car to take a look down under.

After a while, I found the filter. It's a sort of narrow place. Also, since engine is supposed to be hot when draining oil for the oil to slip out easy, it will supposedly be a nightmare getting the filter out without burning myself real bad in the surrounding area of the filter.

Does anyone here have actual experience on changing oil filter on a 16v Fabia Mk1? Ideas? Any special tools to have in handy? I guess those oil filter grippers that are sold won't be necessary, since Fabias store have their oil filter stored in a little black plastic container. Am I wrong?

Anyways, ideas would be much appreciated.

Now, if _you_ have performed this task, how long did the filter change take you?

Cheers!

no experience of them but it looks like you can get a socket on the end of the filter and use a ratchet and socket to undo it. The filter can be left to cool down further as the oil is contained within it. Don't forget to grease/ oil the new rubber seal. There's also a thing like a 'gatorgrip', an oil filter wrench you can buy/borrow/steal/use ;)

Loosen the filter housing using the appropriate wrench and lightly re-tighten by hand while cold then you can remove it easily and safely when warmed up, sounds obvious because it is.
