headlight upgrade?

Featured Replies

Hi all

Well I took Damo's advice on the DRL's and got some mtec's for swmbo's citigo. They look really great nice bright white light, cheers.

Now what to do about the headlights, Any sensible upgrades for these?

I got some Philips xtreme vison, its a big improvement over stock bulps, much more light and the white light goes great with the mtecs DRL :-)

Oh, and check out Philips Silver vision for front indicators, they look really great

Osram Nightbreaker Plus and I'll second the Philips Silvervision...in fact, I think I was one of the first to mention them!

Also upgraded the headlamp bulbs. Now need to do the front fogs :)

What spec/type do you need?  Thinking this might be an option worth trying before I consider an HID conversion - anyone had experience of HID conversions...?

The bulbs you need are h4

Ive had hid kits in other cars but they had projector style headlights so didn't dazzle other driver's

The Citigo has reflector headlights so are not really suitable for hid kits

Some fitments such as h7's you can get special bulbs that have a shield on to prevent blinding oncoming traffic and are called h7r kits

Unfortunately I've yet to see a h4r kit which is what the Citigo would need.

Im thinking of trying the Philips extreme blue visions, but Im undecided yet

My limited experience of "blue vision" headlamps (driving somebody else's car) is that, although they look fine to look AT, you do sense that there's not quite enough light ON the road....that's why I passed and chose the Nightbreaker Plus.

I have no idea how bright the stock bulbs are, as I ripped them out 5 minutes after I picked up the car and replaced them for a pair of Osram Nightbreaker Plus Gold Limited Edition :)

(On a sidenote... that H4 plug can be  a #%¤ PITA to get loose from the bulb connectors)

I agree with you there. They're very tight fit :(

Me too but sadly they look rather yellow/gold compared to my pure, briilant white LED DRLs when looking at the front of the car.  However, I've tried the Polargs and the MTECs which also look yellow compared to the LEDs.  I wonder if the 'gold dip' gives them a yellow/gold tinge and if it would have been better for Osram to have done an Osram Nightbreaker Plus Silver Limited Edition bulb?  That said, they don't look at all yellow when looking out on to the road from the driver's seat.  When will they bring out H4 LED headlamp bulbs?  The technology is there already but perhaps it just isn't suitable for powerful, double-filament bulbs using ordinary headlamp reflectors.

Any thoughts on Phillips crystal vision?

Think from what I have read they are somewhere around 4300k in colour, not sure how white that is compared to what seems the most popular upgrade "Osram night breakers"?

Having read some of these topics on the subject of headlights, just around the time that I took delivery of my new Elegance, I was tempted to shoot the moon, & myself buy upgraded bulbs from day one. Glad that I didn't, as although it was quite a while before I went out in the car at night, I found that the bog-standard issue bulbs that came with the car, were absolutely fine - beat the pants off the zenons that I'd had on my previous car (in truth, they were getting a tad old, & possibly past their "eat by" date), but THEY WERE zenons, & not just Halogens. So, not only a few quid saved there, but got some peace of mind as well, and not risking having fairly expensive upgraded bulbs blowing, within a relatively short space of time.

Then you get even better lights with better bulbs. It's H4 bulb, and seems to last longer than H7 bulb.
