The DVLA

Featured Replies

Does anybody else find that their online services make for a far more efficient way of working?

I've taxed my cars online for some time now because I find it easier than trying to get to a Post Office during working hours (which on my shifts are just about any time!) I noticed that my address on my driving license was out of date on Thursday so once more took to the internet to change it. Once i'd done the bits and bobs I was cheerily thanked for my time and informed that my new license would take up to two weeks to arrive. It landed this morning.

I know the DVLA get some stick but all recent encounters with them have been most surprising.

I've found taxing my car easy online, plus the tax disc looks nicer printed.

I had the reminder a few weeks ago, completed once the mot was done and a arrived a week before I needed it.

Quick and easy.

Never needed to go to a post office for a tax disc.

Normally do my tax online because I'm too bone idle to go and look for my insurance certificate, they come quite quickly as a rule 3 days tops...

My driving license however took 6 weeks for a change of address details.

Can't remember the last time I bought a tax disc in person...

DVLA local offices are better if you want to get a private plate

sorted quickly if you go in person though.

Last several times I've taxed online. Very easy, quick, no queuing and disks arrived within 2 or 3 days.

I'd normally recommend it every time.

However our local village-type sub PO has just re-opened after being renovated and enlarged, and has now for the first time started doing  VED's.

So I'll probably use them (or more likely send SWMBO along as she used to work in there) in future.

It's one of those "use it or lose it" situations.

"More efficient" yes - Much more not so much after having to go through the whole process 3 times due to the browser stalling out half-way through the payment part last week.

For every day run of the mill stuff, yes they are efficient, but for more complicated stuff like changing tax class on a vehicle or transferring a private plate on or off, look forward to a long delay.

It took them 7 weeks to do the necessary to transfer my plate to my new car!

Oh, and were you aware that all local DVLA offices will be closed for good on 31/12/13.

I reckon it's preparation for privatisation like so many other government agencies ?

I can't remember the last time a had to go to a post office to tax a car or for anything else for that matter!

On line is certainly quicker than queuing in the OAP social club that is our local Post Office. (Unless you want advice on piles, bunions and how to make damson jam).
