New battery needed, what would you recommend?

Featured Replies

Jumped into the car this morning to go to work and turned the key expecting it to fire up as always and all I got was flashing lights on my dash and a horrible clicking ticking noise, I thought it might be the starter motor so tried the rocking trick to no avail. Got home this evening and my mate said have you tried jump leads, so we wired his VW T5 upto my car for 5 mins and hey presto she started, I let her run for 10 mins then turned her off unplugged the leads and then she wouldn't start again!

Im thinking new battery?????

How old is your current battery.

A good deep cycle charge might help, but if it's around the 5 year mark, I'd put a new one in.

The Bosch/Varta Silver (096 for me) is a very good battery in my mind.

IME the Varta branded version is cheaper most of the time, but I actually picked the bosch up as it was cheapest when I needed one.

I got a Bosch S5 096. Fits perfectly in the Octavia and much more powerful than the original.

Bosch s5 every time.

And its definitely the battery. It was exactly the same behaviour for mine when it died.

I'm assuming so as the jump leads kicked it back to life last night, I've charged it overnight so im just about to put it back and try starting her. How much should I be looking to pay for a new one by the way?

About 80 quid full price, but possibly cheaper with the Eurocarparts Brisk25 discount if you buy it there.

Bosch silver S5 was about £53 in Costco when I bought one, everywhere else about £90.

The code does not register it keeps telling me its invalid?!

Bargain, the only issue is I don't have a Costco card...my mum does though! Website check for stock me thinks.

Just found a Bosch S5 77ah 780cca for £82 delivered from Euro car parts, is that ampage ok for my car even though my current battery is 61ah?

Yes. 'Ah' is a unit of stored charge, not current delivery. More is better B) .

The 780cca (cold cranking ampage) is actually the current delivery potential.

Black, blue or silver top?

I'm guessing a blue or silver with the 5 years warranty.

Use clbpol25. Brisk25 stopped working ages ago.

Silver, what's the difference?

Colour denotes quality.

I take it I've bought the better quality, I hope so?

Don't need one yet, but for future info... would the battery discussed here also be the best option for my 2010 FL Octavia L&K 2.0 TDI 140 DSG?

I'm gonna get around to getting my Sub/amp wired in to enhance the sound so would a heavier duty battery (larger capacity) be better for parked (engine off) music listening?

With 5 year warranty i would say so.

ECP had 40% of Lion batteries recently but the brand means nothing to me.

  • 1 month later...

Eurocarparts have the Bosch S5 for £121.20 (free delivery) which seems quite steep.

Justcarbatteries have it for £79.99 (free delivery) which seems much more reasonable! Don't suppose there are any known discount codes for JCB are there??

Cheers

Okay. I've realised now that 096 is the wrong battery for my car!

Question now is this: how do you reset the audio and alarm codes after the new battery has been installed and connected?

Thanks.
