Feeling underwhelmed by Collinite 476

Featured Replies

As title suggest, I am feeling a bit underwhelmed after using 476 for the first time. Perhaps I was expecting too much or I have I incorrectly prepared the paint, but there doesn't seem to be as much shine as there is with EGP.

I don't wanna turn this thread into another 'evaluate my process' thread but will list my steps to see if you guys can see where I may have gone wrong.

1. Sprayed car with Demon Shine Rapid Dirt Shifter.

2. Rinse.

3. Sprayed via pressure washer Halfords pressure washer shampoo.

4. Rinse.

5. Shampoo using TBM with AG bodywork conditioner.

6. Rinse.

7. Clayed with BH Medium Clay. Used the remnants of the water from the previous rinse as a lube and then switch to AG Rapid Detailer as water dried up. I noticed that the clay seemed to stick a lot more with the AG so resorted to periodically spraying the car with the pressure washer. Unfortunately I am yet to get hold of a water spray bottle.

7. Rinse.

8. Polished with AG SRP using a Meg's foam applicator rather than my usual method of using mutton cloth/AG polishing cloth.

9. Buffed off SRP on completion of covering the car.

10. Applied 476 with a damp microfibre applicator. I found that it didn't pick up much wax and couldn't see much being applied to the roof. Did the roof leaving one side to haze as dressed the other. After this I found it to be very "dusty". Had I left it too long? After this I decided to buff off panel by panel but now concerned that not enough wax/protection has been applied, hence lack of shine.

It is currently raining or has been raining but due to the street lamps I can't see how well the paintwork is beading. All I can tell is that it looks different to the cars bodywork next to it.

Thoughts?

TIA. Paul.

How long did you leave it from buffing off the AGSRP to applying the Collinite?

I apply Collinite a panel at a time, then buff off. It doesn't like leaving on long to haze or it's sod to buff away

I probably left it no more than 5, 10 minutes. Is that the problem?

As for the Collinite it seems to be beeding this morning so maybe my technique worked. Just wanted a bit more of a wet look shine. Probably not the right product for that.

If you want a better shine, then a sealer is your best bet or a very expensive wax like Swissvax or Zymol

Collinite offers the best protection during the winter months....but, as you say, is less blingy

For a sealer I use Jetseal 109, easy on, easy off

I have been using EGP but fancied something a bit more durable.

Thanks for the advice both.

Paul.

I have been using Collinate for about 2 years now on my Corrida red Fabia and have been pleased with the results. I can be a pain to buff off if left too long or the atmosphere is damp.

I think a lot of polishes, the result and look is so dependant on the base colour. Dark colours always look better than light, I suppose Race Blue is mid way?

If the paintwork is beading, you must be doing something right and Collinate is good protection against the onslaught of winter.

Hi threadbare.

Yep woke up this morning and it is beeding so happy it is working. I am planning to give it another coat at the weekend - weather permitting!

476 isnt a "looks" wax, you would be best with 915 in that case or 845 but then it wouldn't be as durable, reason for the "wet Look" is the oil content in the wax, i've applied two coats to mine at the weekends (incl the wheels) its not as wet looking but its heading into winter (wether we like it or not lol) i would rather have protection than shine, be good to have both though.

I tend to cleanse the paint with a paint cleanser a quick IPA wipedown then apply 476 as a base then 845 to top it off.

Well it's been a week since I applied the 476 and I am impressed. After initially having my doubts they are well and truly gone. Although the car isn't as "shiny" after first applying the wax, it certainly seems to be keeping its shine as the days go by.

Thanks for all the comments.

Paul.

Hi Paul, I didn't see you mention a Quick Detailer in your finishing routine. Great to hear the Colli's lasting, although I'm not surprised.

If the next time you wash after your final dry you could try applying a really showy glitzy QD like Zaino Z8, this will top up the Colli protection a little but more than anything you might find it adds some of the bling you are looking for. You don't need a particularly protective QD as the Colli is tough as nails.

Just something you could experiment with

Hi Sparkly.

That's what I am planning. I don't use a QD when doing a thorough clean but I will use the QD when I wash it at the weekend - after the TBM but before my wax.

Paul.

I think you misunderstand/I explained badly, take your pick :)

If you are waxing I really wouldn't put the QD on before the wax it will stop the wax bonding as well.

QD should for me be the final step after the wax applied has been left to cure to give the blingy finish or use it as a final stage to your Inbetween washes where you don't apply a wax layer i.e after drying.

Well I followed Sparkly's advice and added the QD after the wax. I have to admit, it has bought a bit more zing to the finish. My AG QD is nearly out so I will try the Sonax next time.

Did it rain afterwards?

How come the car is wet?

  • Author

No, luckily it didnt rain at the time or after. That was taken yesterday evening after it had rained having done the job Sunday.

I have some 915 heading to me in the post.  Looking forward to potentially doing a comparison, if the difference is enough to see side by side.....  Might try some 50/50s on the mongrel.

Why not try something from the zaino range..?

z5 or z2? or even there easy on easy off zcs?

if you get your bits from clean and shiny i can get you 10% off as well

  • 3 weeks later...

Best QD I used is Britemax Max Shine.

Then again I am a bit of a Britemax Buff.

You could also try some Britemax Blackmax topped with a couple of coats of Britemax Vantage,

Super finish but not very durable.

Well worth it though.
