Wax durability test....Thanks 'Detailing World'

Featured Replies

I have been asked a few questions recently regarding Durability of waxes...which one to get etc.....
I did a little research and found that a Test had been done on 'Detailing World'

Here is the test and results:

Obviously this was conducted a while ago, so there may be some more waxes that could be added
Happy reading

Chris

Thanks for that Chris - interesting reading. Very surprising to see Collinite 476S giving up so early, as it's lasted a lot longer than that on my Yeti. I'd like to try Collinite 915 but my 476 tin still looks full.

I have some Martin if you fancy a wash and wax..FOC of course

Good test there :) so which is cheapest and easiest to use out of the longer lasting ones?

flawed test though, the waxes could bleed into other waxes giving false readings, i've easily had 8+ months from 845 and 476s.

Cheers chris. I use ag high dev which I've found lasts very well too, 6 months on and it's still beading.

Some of it will probably be down to the preparation advice you gave me!

Eric, one thing to consider is with the harder waxes (like highdev) you only apply a very thin layer via an applicator so although initially expensive the tub lasts ages.

I have been looking at the high def AG recently as my wax has run out basically. I've been using meguiars stage 3 carnauba wax (liquid form) and my brothers collinite 476s but that's nearly run out too.

I usually wash, rinse, clay, wash, rinse, poor boys black hole & then wax if I have time. What other prep advice can you give me?

& is a sealant/glaze recommended?

For the 6 month rewax personally I do the following

Snowfoam

Wash with ag shampoo

Rinse

Detar

Iron x

Rinse

Wash with g3 detox shampoo with all purpose cleaner as a squirt of fairy added

Rinse

Dry with mf towels

I would clay at this stage if necessary (so far it's not been necessary)

I then use ag high dev (ag do not recommend a sealant). If you want to use a sealant with another wax use the sealant 1st before the wax.

I also snowfoam, iron x and clean the wheels with bilberry cleaner then use a proper wheel wax like bilberry after (wheels off so I can get to all the awkward bits.

Finally finish off with a QD and dress the tyres before starting on the inside!

Here were the Best ones in terms of durability and their respective costs:

(All are similar size tubs and contain the same amount of wax)

Autoglym High Defnition ...£34
Collinite 915 Marque D'Elegance ..£25
Poorboys Nattys White & Blue...£12.95
RaceGlaze 55....£67
Swissvax Divine....£2,100
Swissvax Mystery...£475
Swissvax Best of Show..£195
Swissvax Concourso ...£205
Victoria Concours.....£38.95
Zymol Vintage....£2230.00
Zymol Glasur....£99.95

As you can see there is a big difference in prices but all perform similarily in terms of durability.
Where the big differences are supposed to lie are in the finish and light reflecting properties once applied..
Personally....... there is not enough of a difference between them to justify some of those silly prices (Swissvax and Zymol waxes)

If I was buying from this list:

(Not in order...all are equally good)
Nattys Blue Wax

Collinite 915
Victoria Concours
AGHDW
Also......All four offer great value and excellent results

I've used Colli 915 for the past few winters and it lasts really well. I also use the Concours during the summer as it offers more shine and 'bling'. Both are great for the price.

If using Colli, I'd advise not leaving it on too long - it can be a pig to wipe off if it dries!!

Must say I love the Swissvax stuff but v expensive.

I generally use Chemical Guys stuff, following machine polishing as follows;

2 coats of E-Z creme, 2 coats of Jetseal 109, 2 layers of Petes '53

However, I've been disappointed recently when applied to SWMBO's BMW 330d mSport in Carbon Black metallic - after one wash (using CG's wash, 2 bucket method), the finish looked, well, flat. Ok, not flat, but the lustre had gone, measurably so.

So, now I have to decide what to use on swmbo's magic black vRS - any suggestions?

The BMW will need polishing..That should sort it

I would get some Poorboys Black Hole Glaze and then some Vics Concours on top of that.. Should look amazing

BTW... I think Wax looks better on dark colours and Sealer on light ones

£2230 for wax?!

I'm tempted by the AG HD to be fair. I wouldn't mind a full detail by you Chris if you wasn't so far from me!

+1 with the Black Hole and Concours - this is the combo I use in the summer and it is amazing for relatively outlay. It really shines like nobody's business.
