Coolant tank loosing water

Featured Replies

Hi , i have a skoda fab vrs 1.9 tdi. I am toppin the water up every week it is loosing it from max to min inbetween. If i leave it for 2 weeks i get the red light flashing on the dash. . I had two mechanics look at it but dont think they really checked as 1 said it could be the radiator and 1 said its nothing to worry about. Please advise good mechanics or any help i am from birmingham and dont really want to cause serious damage.. There is no water mixing in the oil

I had a similar problem on my PD130 Cordoba.

My very good mechanic spotted the problem. It was the metal pipes going into the heater matrix.

I could never spot it before as the coolant was running down onto the exhaust and so there was never any water there!

Worth checking!

Cheers phil any mechanics u can recomend near the birmingham west midlands area ?

Hello mate,

I had exactly the same problem with my 1.9 diesel. It was losing coolant at a very slow rate and I couldn't see any tell tale signs of leaks in the usual places (radiator, hoses etc).

I use a cracking independent mechanic and gave it to him to have a look at. He pressure tested the system and initially couldn't find a problem. Like a dog with a bone, he asked to keep the car for another day and pressure tested it overnight.

It transpired that there was a pipe at the rear of the engine which was weeping ever so slightly. Apparently, it was a bit of a buggah to get at, however he tightened it and it has been fine ever since.

Reading Phils post above, it could probably have been the same fault, as I had on occasion seen the odd drop of water in the front passenger footwell. Feeling behind the heating matrix cover, I could sometimes but not always feel moisture on a metal pipe.

Hope this helps & good luck.

FP.
