The end of the land rover defender!?

Featured Replies

Quite agree Chappers but it will be sad to see it go. Out of interest, much mention of the 'hand built' production process. I didn't know this, any further info out there on that?

I was going to ask about your forum association too. As a new LR owner I have yet to find a suitable internet home.

I went around Solihull a couple of years ago and was amazed how "hands on" the Defender line was. Very few robots welding bits together, but lots of people with air guns doing nuts up.

As for LR forums, best I've found are Difflock and LRUK (landrovernet.com). The latter is very like here.

I work for the mod & repair our defender wolfs(the 90 & 110's have all gone now),we have been told they have a expected in service life of another 20 years(most of ours are 15 years old already) so will be 35 years old when they get retired   we havent been told what the replacement for the defender will be,I suspect it may be german like the new trucks we have.

Compare that to the Toyota Hilux that sells over 500,000 units per year worldwide...

But how many of those are blown up in conflict zones?

I had a LR ( POSSIBLY A SERIES ?) many many years ago in the African bush . One advantage for our mobile mechanics was that they coud work on it almost anywhwer. In the rainy season ,it was 4wd ,and tractor anywhere . No problems in the wet ,or in the heat when the ground turned to fine dust .Then I got chosen to have one of the new Nissan 1600 ,raised suspension 4x4 .The dashboard warped in the heat, it had to be rally driven in mud and in the heat ,it had to have the air filter cleaned regularly .It could be serviced only on a ramp/pit and the fuel consumption made the LR look thrifty . I also carried two spare wheels and two twenty litre cans of fuel . What a lot of LR fans might not know is that in Smiths Rhodesia , the Landie was also a platform for an armoured rail trolley .

nOW THAT WAS SOMETHING USED IN A CONFLICT ZONE

No denying that it was/is the best 4x4xFar.

This one is pretty good, other than for using in Central London maybe.

LR Defender vs Tata Bolero......

Just saying ;)
