Trouble starting in the morning when cold

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've got Skoda 1.9 diesel 2009 Superb. The car won't start in the morning without a struggle. Eventually goes okay all day and then does the same the following morning when it's cold.

Car just keeps trying and then after 3 or 4 minutes it will start.

I've ended up burning out the starter as a result. I replaced this, changed the glow plugs and had the connections cleaned. Now the starter that replaced the old one has 9 teeth whereas the original had 10. Does anyone know if this is a problem? Had the car on multiple computers and no faults are showing. The battery has been changed also.

Has anyone got this problem or experienced and could point me in the right direction?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

If battery and starter are ok check glow plugs

I realise I am not addressing your problem but to demonstrate that all are not equal:  I just had six weeks away with my Skoda cocooned in my garage for a total of 43 days.  Last Tuesday morning, I unwrapped her and  turned the key and the beautiful 2.0 litre diesel fired away without a problem.  I was half expecting a dead battery or worse!   :sun:

Is the battery man enough? Could it be a bad earth?

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

I've had the glow plugs replaced and the connections have been checked as said. The battery has been checked by an electrician so I know it's okay.

Does anybody know if the the starter needs to be 10 pins or is 9 okay?

I'm no mechanic, but I'm thinking that, if the starter will turn over for 3 or 4 minutes, then both it and the battery are fine, and I'd be looking at what else is supposed to be happening inside the engine in order for it to fire, such as some fuel getting from A to B.

It's 20 years since i was in the motor trade but i'm pretty sure it still applies, you need the exact right number of teeth on your starter to mesh correctly with the flywheel teeth otherwise it'll jam up because the spaceings between the teeth on the starter and the flywheel will be different. Double check before fitting. There's folk on here a lot more up to date than me, i'm sure somebody will enlighten you. Have you had the compression's checked ? might be worth checking them. good luck.

Hi,

Is it cranking normally? Have the glow plug relay been tested?

If so, it seems like a bit of air gets into fuel system... fuel lines needs to be tested on both in-feed and return.

Typed on phone - sorry for spelling etc.
