Coolant Loss, brown residue on cap?

Featured Replies

Hello All,

I need some urgent helps please......

I have read various posts on here regarding Fabia VRS coolant loss but I have yet to find an answer with a solution to fix it?

Quick run down, starting lossing coolant so the mechanic noticed a rad leak so we changed the rad.  We was still lossing coolant after the change and I noticed a white foam being produced in the coolant tank so decided to take the plunged and change the head gasket hoping this would fix the issue, still no joy.

After scracthing my head several times and reading lots of posts on here I then decided to change the coolant bottle and cap, still no joy.

I have read that a water pump could be causing this, this is the only thing I have left to change to fix the problem, does anyone know if this will fix it before I spent several hundred pounds again?

I am still lossing water from the coolant tank overflow due to high pressure being created and I have now noticed a brown (gold) residue being pushed out of the overflow and it sticking to the coolant cap.  What can be causing this?

So I have now changed:

Radiator

Head Gasket

Coolant Tank & Cap

Please, please, please someone out there tell me how to fix this problem....

Thanks AzCoop121

You could try putting some of that dye in it that shows under UV light? That could maybe help you see if it's leaking externally anywhere?

Regarding the gold residue: you haven't put any sealant in the coolant have you, like K-Seal??

Hi Sharpyy,

No not sealant has been put in as its a new Rad, we have had the car running for an hour and can not find any leaks at all.  Really scratching my head with it

Sounds like a real headache, have you had a really good check of all the coolant pipes to make 100% it's not an external leak. If it was me I'd get the UV dye, check the whole system with a black light then if that doesn't show anything, start searching for internal leaks. You've already ruled out the head gasket and rad so everything else should be relatively cheap to investigate in comparison. I wouldn't change the water pump unless you've ruled out all of the possible problems first, it's an expensive possibility to have done if you're not fully sure that it's your problem.

Hope you get it sorted.

I have been reading more and more posts on here and it does seem to be pointing at the water pump due to the plastic fan.  I have read that a faulty water pump would causing the coolant to be over pressured & create it to leak, also create erratic temp gauge which I have also had happening.

Can someone give me there thoughts on if the water pump would cause these issues?

Thanks Again

I've had a water pump fail on an old Diesel Corsa and it was gushing out everywhere very quickly. I would have thought that would be obvious to a mechanic? Unless there are differing degrees of a fudged pump?

is your rad getting hot? ive got the same problem and am thinking ive lost a blade on the water pump but my rad doesn't get hot

The brown residue sounds like it could be oil emulsion, does your car have an oil/water cooler sandwiched with the oil filter because these can pinhole causing oil to contaminate the water.

Alternatively If your radiator isn't getting hot there's a fair chance that the water pump impeller has come off the shaft and the coolant in the water jacket is overheating and pressurising the system.

Rad is still getting hot but so is the coolant and coming out of the overflow....I am having the water pump changed this week so I will update the post so you can see if it is a fix.

Ive got to have a rant about this problem........today I spent anonther £200 on a new water pump and cambelt, the guy took off the old water pump and parts of the impellor was missing so here was me thinking, Yes, found the problem.

Just done a motorway run to work and the problem is still there....temp gauge keeps dropping and water is ****ing out of the overflow.

What more can i do, right now I feel like going at the car with a sledge hammer..

Tried bleeding the coolant system?

the guy has done that when he changed the water pump today

Can we assume the system was thoroughly flushed to remove the pieces of broken impeller?

Have you changed the thermostat?

Thermostat is the next thing on my list to change

really sorry to bring this thread back up after 2.5 years, but having the same problem with mine, and need to know what was the outcome??

Excess cooling system pressure will force coolant out of the header tank, if the engine isn't overheating then it's most likely a head gasket problem, test for this by opening the coolant tank first thing before you even start it, if you get a pop/hiss as pressure escapes while the engine is stone cold then your head gasket has gone probably due to head lift, redo the HG and use ARL bolts to permanently solve the problem.
