Faulty Amundsen, anyone else having problems?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

My Amundsen keeps playing up, it all started about 6 weeks ago when the screen stayed blank on start up with no audio and no combination of button presses made any difference but suddenly, just when I was thinking a trip to the dealers was looming, after 10 mins it suddenly sprung back to life, very strange!

Then a couple of weeks ago, it was playing dead again, but this time nothing until I stumbled on the correct button press sequence, press/hold "on/off" and then press/hold "menu" while still holding "on/off", after a few secs the unit re-booted.

Then, last week, I shunted the car off the drive, switched off, took key out of ignition, radio kept playing for a few secs, but would normally switch off when key withdrawn, then the speakers wirred back into life, still no key in ignition but kept blasting loud thud thud thud noises, then a popping noise and silence. The head unit stayed blank on restarting the engine, but after a minute or so the welcome screen came on, then went off again, did this a few times, I left the car for an hour or so then on my way to work it kept trying to boot up to no avail. Suddenly after 10-15 mins, it burst back into life, and then continued working as normal.

Earlier today, it was blank again on start up, the re-boot sequence would not work either but then after 10 mins or so, it just started working again, getting fed up now, definitely faulty!!!

Has anyone else had any similar problems yet? I had a similar issue with Columbus in my old Superb II and eventually the unit blew the motherboard and had to be replaced by Skoda/Lease company but this was on a 40 month old car, not a 4 month old, so not too impressed if they have still got similar issues on the new technology, glad I bought the extra warranty, cos I'm not going to shell out £2,000 + vat for a new one when it blows up after 61,000 miles as this ones not a lease car!

Anyway, got to book the first service soon as will be due early November so will mention it to dealer but I suspect this is going to be one of those, "Sorry sir, but it's working ok at the moment and we can't find anything wrong" responses when I get the key handed back, only for it to go wrong again the next day!

Why don't you record it doing the fault on a camera and show the dealer when you take it in. They can't deny there is a fault then if it works ok when they test it.

I had a similar problem on my Bolero in my 11 plate Octavia, it would randomly not start etc, told my dealer about it, booked the car in and they straight replaced, no quibble about it not happening whilst there or anything, just a straight swap, and when I picked my car up all teh radio stations etc were all as before etc, so presume they must have a way of 'ghosting' all infor over or something maybe?

Cheers both, I'll see what they say when it goes in, not really worried about it, just its bloody annoying cos the screen is central to most of the cars features like mode selection, telephone, nav, traffic reports, etc. Great idea about recording it Pumatron.

My screen went blank today - everything else worked and could change things through the MFD steering wheel. It came back on next time I started up though....

Does the Skoda unit have the option that the Mk 7 Golf has where you can have the radio screen blank, but as you reach to touch it, it wakes up again?

Yes, I think I have seen that option but that's not what we are talking about here, as the sound also cuts out and the unit seems temporarily bricked until it re-boots no matter how many screen or button presses you make.

How do you activate that option? - it didn't work like that for me as the screen would not come back on

Press menu, scroll to set up, select screen, there is an option to turn off screen after 10 secs. The screen comes back on when your hand moves near.

Mine was doing this the other morning. I had my phone connected to the USB and it was flat. I considered that may be causing the problem, though it has charged fine from part charge state, so I unplugged it. Shortly after all was well and has been since. The symptom was ..... Radio fine, start navigation and system turned off. Wait a while and it turned on again, same procedure and same result. Unplug phone, same procedure (after a short wait) and everything worked fine

Yep, I've also had similar issue when phone connected by USB. I powered down my phone the other day whilst connected to USB and the whole Amundsen unit powered down too. I've agreed with dealer that we will monitor the situation and at least they have it on record that it's been playing up so no argument in future about warranty cover.
