Took our Octavia 2.0 140 dsg 55 plate for MOT. Last year they said give it a bit of welly before test as it does not do much mileage in between ie this year 3000 miles. So when able to gave it a kickdown and sure enough lot of smoke came out, gave it another kickdown and this time hardly anything came out.I then was in traffic so just on light throttle and then became aware "is that a police or ambulance around sound"?. It then became apparent its me, what the heck have I done.When standing with bonnet open cannot hear the sound but soon as moving off it comes back again. Looking at a old thread a member had his at 97k, ours has only done 53000 miles He then went on to a further 49k without replacing turbo. So guys is this a sound of turbo and what would you advise. Appreciate advice.

 

Sounds like the turbo to me -Have it checked.  If you can manage without your car for a week get a local garage to remove your turbo and send it for refurbishment, then re-fit. Your looking at around 5 hours labour, oil & filter and whatever the turbo re-furbishers charge. A lot cheaper than a new/reconditioned turbo.

I lived with the noise for a few months, even got used to it. Then on bank holiday Monday it went kaboom in spectacular fashion. Luckily no swarf got sucked in though so my engine survived.

Due to the mileage I do I bought an OEM one and including fitting got £30 change from £1700.

Get someone to check it out and get it refurbished. It will save you a lot of money if it goes kablammo!

Some are nosier than others. Our last 1.9 Octy at work had a turbo sound so loud that more than one "passenger" thought that I had left the wailers on. It managed 115,000 miles of very hard use in it's two years before it was retired.

 

The identical (but 2 year older) car before that preceded it had an almost silent turbo - well two actually as the first one expired quite dramatically at about 55k with no prior warning.

They will go on for a bit like that but you do want to avoid the self destruction in the end as mentioned.

I found there is very little between an exchange unit and having yours rebuilt. Midland turbo in Nottingham (highly recommended, next day delivery and they arrange collection of your exchange unit up to 14 days later) quoted me £200 for a rebuild and £310 for an exchange unit (all plus VAT obviously). The rebuild charge can go higher, closer to the exchange price, depending on what has gone wrong. You need a full oil change, including a new oil filter, and I would recommend an oil flush as well. The feed and return pipe to the turbo need replacing, and they aren't cheap, and make sure the fitter follows the instructions to the letter in order to prime the turbo with oil before starting the engine.

Thanks for answers guys.Took it to Skoda dealer in Eastbourne and after road testing it he put it on the diagnostic and it told him it was the turbo boost valve had stuck. He cleaned it and took it foe test with me also saying it will still have a slight noise and it went because of our type of driving ie not giving it welly every now and again. Whilst doing the road test with him it was bucketing down with rain so could not hear to much. However on wayhome it started again. He said the diag m/c told him it was resolved. Plus he said Skoda would charge about £2000 for new one because the valve cannot be replaced like other makes and Skoda only sell the complete turbo. Dous not sound riight to me.
