Front end "clunking" on 2004 Octavia Vrs

Featured Replies

I had this posted on a different page and was advised to post on the Mk 1 page!

I've just bought a 2004 (54 plate) Octavia Vrs. - petrol.

Have replaced drop links but still get a very annoying "clunk" from NSF.

My garage said that short of suspending a mechanic under the car and going out on a road test they could see no problem!

I've read quite a few post on this subject and it would seem that replacing bushes on the ARB is favourite.

My car had done 114K.

Anybody else cured this sort of problem by replacing these bushes?

I changed mine for normal ones and the clunking went away.

Sorry! Not technically minded!  What is 'polly bushed'?

just a tougher stronger more durable/expensive version of a normal bush

This may be 'silly question time', but I'll risk it!

If the bushes were bad should my garage have noticed this when replacing the drop links?

well depends on the person really, but the arb bushes are more tucked away out of sight so they probably just cracked on the drop links, and never took any notice

Fine!  In that case I'll forgive them!

Thanks for your advice.  I'll let you know the outcome as soon as I can afford to have the work done!

(Now live in Scarborough, North Yorkshire.  I was born in Kilmarnock)!

Thanks again!

Thats what briskoda is for to help one an other

Had the same problem when i bought mine, but droplinks ans ARB bushes sorted it, common problem i think.

I replaced my ARB bushes but get the knocking now I have fitted uprated suspension, I Think I didn't do the arb bushes up tight enough and the increased pressure its making the knock more noticable. I'm pretty sure my tie rod ends are shot as well, bit of wobble in the steering wheel.

Welcome to the road of replacing every bloody thing on the suspension in the pursuit of stopping that knocking...

Is the clucking only when accelerating and de-accelerating

Thanks All!  Took my car in to have FARB bushes replaced.  Work was suspended as the garage said I needed new clips as well as bushes.  They put everything back together so I could use the car and I arranged to go back when the other parts arrived.

Well, to cut a long story short, I have not been back as the knocking has gone!

Don't ask.  I just don't know!

Thanks for all your advice!

Was going to suggest the arb but you've mentioned it yourself, the whole front end of mines is polly bushed bar the arb so thats next on my agenda as i've got the same clunk

i myself was thinking of getting this for mines

THat woin't fix your knocking dude.

Poly ARB bushes are well known for causing knocking themselves as they are stiffer material they amplify sound through the ARB. Any slight movement is enough. I have poly bushes all round the whole car and replaced the FARB with a new set of super pro from a year old set as ARB was knocking. Now it is even worse

will probably re fit std oem ARB bushes next or go for tighter poly ones to try to stop any movement what so ever, as drives me nut's
