Wheel alignment out - 450 miles - Will it damage the tyres?

Featured Replies

Hi,

So my wheel alignment has been out pretty much since getting my car 450 miles ago.

I had it aligned yesterday at the dealership whilst a number of other jobs were carried out. i didnt get it done sooner because the dealership is 20 miles away from me (40 mile round trip) and it seemed pointless traveling one day for the wheel alignment then a week later for all the other jobs.

In hindsight though,  will my tyres be damaged from the tracking being out for the first 450 miles?

The car was delivered with the tracking out and i left it a few days before reporting it incase it was the roads i was driving on etc.

Can anyone advise if the tyres will have been damaged?

Thanks

Wouldn't have thought so.

I'm guessing you've given them a look over.

Was the alignment wildly out?

The steering was sitting, when on a dead straight road ( a aircraft taxiway to be precise) at 0830 and 0230 (not quite 9 & 3 but noticeably out!)

im going to have a good look over them tonight when the car is inside my work place. weather is terrible for the past few days!

p.s; thanks for the super fast reply !

Dunlop tyres by any chance?

Doubtful that any extra wear has occurred as you took easy with the new car and tyres for the first few hundred miles.

(did you check and reset tyre pressures and the TPMS from collecting it.)

If you do consider some extra wear has or might of happened,

maybe change the front wheels/tyres to the rear on the same side. (if directional tyres.)

Or just do that in a few thousand miles time.

Yes, few hundred miles were taken easy on the new tyres, I don't really fancy swapping tyres over already,

Just wanted to make sure no serious damage has been done to them with this prob.

I was not suggesting swapping tyres, only rearranging them moving the wheels.

just moving the front wheels and tyres to the rear and the rears to the front if bothered about any extra wear.

No need to really, and if you want ask the Dealership to do it next time for free as a gesture for the snagging problems.

Did you not already remove the rear wheels and paint the Drums,?

its all of a 40 minute DIY job to do all 4 changed around. (if using the spare as the extra wheel.)

Ye i did remove the rears to paint the drums, I may ask the dealership to swap them when its back in there next week!

But TBH i may not bother, if looking tonight i cant see anything out the ordinary with the fronts,

Being on new tyres, the damage is probably minimal, if any.  Have a look on the edges (inner and outer) - if you see ridging, then there's been some effect.  Chances are with the slippiness of new tyres (due to the release compound), any "abnormal wear" will probably sort itself out within the next few hundred miles or so.

Was there something seriously out with the tracking/alignment, or just a bit of pulling to the left, that they passed as OK from driving it at the PDI, and as you drove away with the new car ?

I would normally leave a new car/vehicles suspension to settle from new,

get the springs settled with a load carried over a few miles, bushes & tyres settled and less green.

Run in generally. 500 miles as a min,

but more like 1000 miles to get the car sitting and get used to the handling.

Obviously not to be left un-checked or adjusted if something is really far out,

but then the Technician checking the vehicle before delivery should have noticed that.

I do not remember ever getting a new car and not using a tank of fuel on the first day.

Without actually inspecting them that's a pretty unanswerable question

Having said that, I would guess that unless you're running silly show car camber and driving like a BTCC car any damage would be negligible to non-existent

More damage was probably done in the 5 or 6 miles ragging it around the docks

I don't think that the steering wheel being out of level necessarily means the tracking is out; either toe in or toe out.

So I doubt that any damage has been done to the tyres; it would be visible by scuffing on the inside or outside of the tyres.

All you have to do to see if they are worn is to look at them and feel for feathering on the edges.

Are you sure the tracking was out and it was not just the steering wheel not on straight?

I did think it might be the steering wheel not on properly, when i collected the car from the garage they said they had adjusted the tracking.

I had a look last night and couldn't feel/see anything on the front wheels, inside or outside edge.
