Apologies for the seemingly stupid post, however after reading numerous posts I'm a little confused.

 

I want to save my clutch and driving a "performance diesel" is a new thing to me so please bear with me.

 

When the car temp is OK (i.e. gauge in the middle). With the conservative stage 1 on the car, when I put my foot down and I am ready to change gear from 2nd to 3rd..I get up to 2k and change to 3rd and same into forth. The power is smooth and feels nice and strong.

 

However alot of people on here say not to accelerate unless your over 2.5k revs.. which I rarely ever do. 

 

When you say put your foot down do you mean to the floor? basically ragging it?

 

Because when I feed the power in, I don't see the need to wait till 2.5k before changing each gear. I think its a little unnecessary.

 

I never just dump my foot to the floor no matter what gear I am in.. so getting the satisfying pull i am getting without revving into the 2.5k-3k is quite nice.

 

However, if im systematically bumming my clutch/turbo etc driving like this then ill stop.

 

 

 

 

I know you should resist flooring it at low revs because this will potentially **** the DMF, but can't see what difference it'll make to your clutch providing you don't 'slip' it when changing gear?

When you need to change the DMF you need a new clutch as well. The same as you need new pads with new brake discs.

I never just dump my foot to the floor no matter what gear I am in..

 

Ohh, am I doing all this driving lark wrong? :(

agree with your reply- what I meant was that changing at different revs correctly won't in itself affect how long the clutch lasts but you're right if the DMF goes you'll need a new clutch too

If your turbo does go... do you need to get everything remapped again?

The problems come when you are say in 4th or 5th gear with revs at 1500rpm then floor the throttle. That's bad for the DMF.

 

Feeding the power in gently from 1500rpm in 2nd or 3rd gear should be fine.

 

As long as you are not labouring the engine and basically forcing the engine to inject fuel and produce boost in too low gear.

60mph in 6th on motorway is 1.9k revs... is this a problem?

If i want to speed up can i gradually feed the power back in or do i have to drop to 5th and work back up?

On the stock map you start getting full boost with full boost at around 1900rpm. This may be different on a custom map.

 

If you are very gentle (feather touch on the throttle) then those revs at that speed then it should be ok. Anything more than a very light pressure to maintain your speed then you should be changing down really.

I find it very annoying that i cant cruise at 60mph in 6th and gradually increase the throttle if i want to speed up.

Dropping down to 5th just to go an extra 10mph then go back to back 6th is ridiculous in my eyes.

Wish id never had it mapped now

Is it just as bad if you put your foot down up to about 3k revs in just one gear and then just steadily brake or roll and slow down to a sensible speed??

Always had hassle free driving and now with all the 'rules' of potential dos and donts... it makes me semi nervous that i have to look at my revs before i do anything. Feels very unnatural

Reason is that when i dip the clutch to change gear the revs drop down so far that when i press the accelerator again in new gear (lets say 4th) its down between 1.5k-2k no matter how fast i was going before (on normal roads not motorway)

Drive how you would with any car. The power in these engines is low down, remember, these cars are diesel, so if coming from a petrol motoring background it will feel a little unnatural at first.

Totally agree, I also find this! 

 

I think we need to practice changing gear quicker!?

1 - 4th you are pretty safe mate. If you are flooring it everywhere from low down you need to learn how to drive imo :p

 

Drive normally and stop worrying or do as I do and drive everywhere on BOOOOOOST :D

Mines a moderate speed progressive push rather than literally dumping my foot.

1 - 4th you are pretty safe mate. If you are flooring it everywhere from low down you need to learn how to drive imo :p

Even if it wasnt mapped the same principle applies. Providing you have a good map it shouldnt make the issue any worse.

Dont feel like you need to watch the revs constantly. 1st, 2nd and 3rd use the revs more or less as you like. In fairness it's pointless flooring it in 6th at 1500rpm, no power there so slow to make progress. Changing down and using the revs is better for the car and quicker to speed up too.

Around town (once warm) I generally change up around 2500rpm - 3000rpm, as I said before lower gears it's not really a problem. 4th 5th and 6th I just keep it above 2000rpm if I'm making progress. If I'm cruising then drop it into 5th if I'm doing over 50, or 6th if I'm doing over 60mph. If I want to speed up from 60 I'll knock it into 5th, put my foot down, then back into 6th to cruise.

So when you change below 1500rpm, is the car not struggling/almost cutting out because the revs have dropped so much? Cant say I've experienced this issue, as I said if I change when I drive around at 2500/3000rpm area I normally end up with it sitting at about 2000rpm in the next year ready for cruising.
