Great reply.

When you mentioned engine cutting out i obviously didnt explain my self clearly.

Ill try again..

When i change gear...generally 2.5 while round driving... needle will generally start to drop..as i put my foot down in the new gear.. the needles lowest point is just before 1.5k. My point is if im nipping along (not ragging it) and its time to go into 4th.. that means im starting my forth gear gradual acceration starting from only just above 1.5k.. which is apparently v bad

Ok, I understand a bit better what you mean. When I'm just driving around normally I aim to have my revs no lower than 2000rpm. Any lower and it just gets a bit juddery and vibrates too much for my liking. If I change up and the revs are about that point once I changed gear, I can then either cruise at that speed (30mph = 3rd, 40mph = 4th and so on) or put my foot down and be at safe clutch & dmf speeds too.  If I change up at around 2500-3000rpm even slowly the revs end up about 2000rpm (from memory). The revs drop down but you dont loose much speed so once you let the clutch out the revs should raise to around 2000rpm. I'll experiment tomorrow with revs and speeds, I cant say I pay much attention to the revs, I kinda drive by how it sounds and feels.

Your fine mate, stop worrying ;)

The fact that revs drop to 1.5k in 4th tells me you are not pushing the car / clutch at all.

Now go out and enjoy the car :D

Will do dad :)

Just love that strong pull in forth changing from 3rd at 2k rev. Maybe its my map but its such a strong and smooth feeling. Very addictive. Rick at unicorn developments in stockport did mine... very popular on the audi tuning scene and well respected. However if its bumming the car.. ill save my money and drive like my nan. **** turbo cars lol

I just realised im talk out my arse a little. The car isnt doing 1.5k revs when i change.. its only dropping that far because the clutch is pressed.. it shoots back up to 2k-2.5k when it engages when the clutch is released...

For some reason i took revs as a reading from the engine not the fact the clutch was pressed

Idiot

That thought did cross my mind that that is what you were maybe looking at. :D

Above everything else enjoy it!

You have some good roads up your way; get out and enjoy your car and the map :)

If you want to do a meet up and some driving comparisons etc then drop me a PM.

Problem I find is that i struggle to change when above 1.5k. Reason is that when i dip the clutch to change gear the revs drop down so far that when i press the accelerator again in new gear (lets say 4th) its down between 1.5k-2k no matter how fast i was going before (on normal roads not motorway)

I've noticed I do this, I think it's because I have a smf fitted and that makes the revs rise and drop a lot faster than those with a dmf though.

I've had my car for 40k miles now, and I've ALWAYS used the torque to save me changing gear. I've done about 10k with a simple Stage 1 Shark map, and another 10k with a hybrid turbo (still on stock clutch & DMF). Touchwood there's been no problems at all so far, and I'm just about to roll onto 100k. My Dad had the car before me (of which I used it regularly), and I know he drove it this way too, and he had it from 28k to around 60k.

One of the reasons I love the car so much is due to that surge of torque that you get - as said previously, it's addictive! I want the car to be usable and NOT like a petrol having to change down all the time. So what if it shortens the life of my DMF a bit, I'm not really arsed, as I'm going to replace it at some point soon anyway...!

By dropping gears all the time and driving to 'protect' the clutch, you're just eliminating one of the awesome main characteristics of this type of car. When people remap one of these cars, they should be more than well aware of the extra wear on the clutch and DMF, and that they're probably going to need to change it at some point anyway. If you can't live with this fact then simply keep it standard! Chances are that the clutch and/or DMF will go at some point anyway...

Just my 10 pence worth...

Yeah a SMF will make it drop quicker, but after you let the clutch out in the next gear it'll still be the same revs as a dmf as you're not slowing down quicker.
