Coulmbus / 2Gb SD card / Firmware updates

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Now be gentle with me here... I'm very old and potentially stupid. Definitely bewildered...

I own a 2009 Elegance 170 DSG. The head unit will only accept 2Gb SD cards and I want to use up to 32 Gb. The postcode selector only goes to 7 digits (eg B49 6--!!?). When I press and hold the Setup button, I get FM, AM and DAB.... no access to any firmware information......

Questions:-

Will pressing <>&i just give me information or bugger up my system if it reboots?

I presume that a 38xx firmware will do what I need... Does one still get it from myGTI blah blah?

If I install it, will it wipe my maps?

I don't have the original disk and I don't know what version it is. Will I have to find a nice friendly supplier of map disks to re-install the original maps (or, perhaps, even upgrade? It would be nice to have modern maps when visiting my son in Liverpool).

Where the hell did the DAB option come from? Can I use it?

Do I need to know anything else?

With many thanks,

Jules

To answer your questions with a question: what is the part number of your Columbus?

If it was factory fitted to a 2009 car it is probably on 1xxx or maybe early 2xxx firmware and will either be 3T0... with no suffix or 3T0...A (revision 'C').

Knowing this info will enable us to help more. It can be found on a sticker on top of the unit itself as you do not have the hidden menu activated.

38xx or 40xx will give you 7-digit postcodes but upgrading will wipe your maps.

Some Superbs were fitted with DAB quite early on. No idea which ones I'm afraid. I expect you'll need an additional module and aerial, but not sure really.

If you can pin down which part number your's is I'll point you in the direction of suitable firmware.

Alternatively, ask your dealer as some people have had both done for free, £20-40 or others £200+...

HTH for now.

Cheers... I'll do some hunting...

Ok then,,

Yes I reckon you could go to 4020 but you will lose maps and music on install, as the HDD is re-partitioned. These will then need to be reloaded. Do you have a recent map disc?

Feel free to PM me for further advice.

I want to do the same for the Columbus in my 2010 Superb Elegance.

Currently have 5 digit postcode selector, no hidden menu, AM/FM only when pressing/holding Setup

I have a map disk in the glove box - how do I check which version, and how/where do I obtain a more current version if needed?

But more importantly could someone advise me on how I get the unit out to find out the part number?

Thanks

If the Columbus was factory fitted to a 2010 Superb then it will probably be 3T0...A.

You should be able to confirm this from the menu by looking for a hardware code.

In which case, an unmodified 4020 firmware from 'My GTI' will work but will wipe your maps. As you have a map disk that's not a problem.

You can confirm the version with a 4-digit code after 'SW version'.

What version is the map disk? If it's a genuine Skoda / VW disk it will say on it.

I only bought the car recently, and  do not know if the Columbus was factory fitted. Presumably it was as I found a receipt tucked inside the service book showing the head unit was replaced under warranty in December 2011 although this does not mention the name of the unit.. To confuse matters further, the manual supplied with the car is for a Bolero and I had to download the Columbus manual from the internet.

When I press and hold the Setup button it doesn't open the hidden menu, just the AM/FM page. Presumably I need to pop the head unit out to find the 3T0.... number and SW Version. How do I do this without using a crowbar?

The map disk is genuine  - Europe West Version 6

If you pop off the fascia trim with a plastic spatula, it will reveal 4 torx screws. Remove these and it slides out.

Version 6 is too old to give 7 digit postcode functionality with the newer firmware though and nor will you get points of interest. It will work for the basics though.

That's odd, because the Columbus currently has POI's but only 5 digit postcodes.

It also has the speed limit shown in the top right of the map, which I thought was only added to later versions?

Where can I get a later version of the maps?

Yes it will have pois in the older format but the new firmware treats them differently so relies on newer maps to make them work. You need version 7 maps or higher for 7 digit postcodes and 7.2 or higher for pois.

The dealer is the only official place for a legitimate copy and vw dealers are also an option. Ebay may have some genuine discs but beware copies.

Thanks for your help. How much should I expect to pay for a genuine disk from a dealer / ebay?

Its not fixed. Some dealers will charge a lot more than others. I bought some other parts fron vw and they did it for 30 quid although I didn't get a disk. Back in the day I picked up a v7 disk from an eBay seller selling bankrupt stock cheaply, but some places will charge up to £200 according to people on here. Worth a chat with your dealer first though, or perhaps if you are due a service they may be more helpful...

Thanks again. I will post again when I've extracted the head unit.

Do speak to the dealer as I have known a few people to get firmware update and the latest maps for free...

They had bought their previous 3 or 4 cars from the same dealer and always went back for servicing so had a very good relationship with them.

Now remember what I said at the start..... I'm old and potentially stupid......

What does PM mean!!!

Trust Skoda/VW in redditch want to charge me lots... Interestingly, I was supposed to have a DSG oil change when I bought the car, but apparently it wasn't done. The did do it as a courtesy though at the recent service.....

Ps.. Thanks for all the help

I'm not far from you (Bromyard) if you want to meet and chat through this issue.

I have firmware discs ready to go if you need them.

I lurve you!!

Ps Figment:- do the trim immediately around the unit, not the outer one. Start at the top and don't disconnect the airbag light, just rotate the fascia out of the way.

There is ( not surprisingly) a YouTube clip!

OK we have:

Part Number: 3TO 035 680 A

HW: H55

SW: 2844

Following thread with interest as I'm sure my firmware needs updating and I know v10 maps are beginning to appear.

I just noticed that the latest user manuals (11.2013) are available at http://new.skoda-auto.com/en/experience/service/board-literature

The new Columbus one has a reference to DAB radio and a page at the end about reversing camera system, but otherwise looks pretty similar to before.

Figment: you should be able to go to unmodified 4024 from the mygti site, subject to finding updated maps

As adamal says; unmodified 4020 from My GTi.

I've just loaned my discs out to another member and can send them on to you when I get them back if you wish.

Or read up on the advice for burning the firmware on this forum. i.e. slow burn...

May I get back to you about the discs please? I'm attempting to download the firmware files from rapidshare using the link from My GTI, but It's painfully sloooooooooooooow.
