Coulmbus / 2Gb SD card / Firmware updates

Featured Replies

No problem.

I'm hoping that mine will be back soon as the borrower has successfully installed 4020 from them.

Took me several hours to download as we live in the sticks (6mb download maximum...)

Taken me several hours so far too, and I'm on 30mb!

Rapidshare throttle 'guest' downloads to encourage them to sign up for a paid account.

Before I go ploughing into this upgrade, do I need to do anything to the firmware files to make them Skoda specific (i.e. to make 4020 become 4024), or is that done automagically??

No. It's all the same file and it automatically knows which vehicle manufacturer you are in.

You can't change it yourself.

I've finally got the firmware .iso file and successfully written it to a CD, so tomorrow I'll be going for it.

ARGGHHHHHH!

Downloaded, burnt to CD and verified image. Inserted CD into drive, SWL found and started but stalls at 29% (APPL 5%)  After about 5 mintes APPL jumps to 8%, 14% then 100% where it throws  SWL failed Error saying to load same SWL on different media to continue or new SWL to start over. Have tried the same SWL on 3 different CDs (Verbatim) burnt at speeds of 16x 4x and 1x - all images verified, all fail at the same point. This leads me to suspect an error in the downloaded file. I'm downloading the iso again (another few hours of my life I won't get back)

I'd like to get this sorted this weekend if possible. Is there anywhere else I can get a copy of the iso file, or is anyone willing to upload a copy to an FTP server for me?

I can't even download the Unofficial SWL recovery CD, as it was hosted on megaupload, which has been shut down

Just a thought - if the firmware had been updated by the previous owner, would this cause the upgrade to fail?

Can't help with sending the 4020 iso file as mine is modified for older units, but I can email you the software recovery iso if you PM me an email address?

I don't think a previous update to the firmware should cause you any problems, possibly a download issue as you suggest, or the fact that some units also prefer DVDs to CDs.  They are known to be a bit fickle, but Verbatim should have been good enough if it was going to take a CD.

Adam

If the firmware on the HU has been upgraded you will only get an error message if the one you are using is the same generation or older.

So 'no' is the answer to your last question.

It's probably not an issue with the download but more likely the burn or disc. The Columbus is notoriously fickle!

Others have said use high quality media but mine are recorded on cheapies. I do agree that you'll want to burn it at 1x if possible and verify afterwards to give yourself the best chance of success.

Reboot the Columbus (<, > & i) then try the disc again.

If that fails again, then reboot and activate a 'software downgrade' in the Columbus menu before trying again.

I doubt either will work, but worth a shot before burning another disc.

Thanks both.

Since last reply I have downloaded Version 3970 (3974) which has successfully installed on the HU. I'm now trying 4024 again, (hopefully) safe in the knowledge I can 'downgrade' to 3974  if it fails again.

@ Adam - PM coming your way soon

@ KBPhoto - If this attempt fails I may take you up on the offer of discs by mail, if that's OK?

@ Adam - email received. Thanks

4th attempt at upgrading to 4024 failed at exactly the same point, and this after downloading the iso again from rapidshare (I took the plunge and paid for 1 month's access to get a decent d/l speed - what a difference)

So now just started re-doing 3974 again.

As an aside, when I had 3974 installed earlier, the setup menu showed version info and this showed the installed map version was 7011 (although still has 5 digit postcode entry) Does this sound correct as I thought upgrading the firmware would wipe the maps?

It should have wiped maps yes. Did you actually try the map, perhaps it was wiped but the old version info was still stored. That corresponds with v6 or thereabouts I think.

Pressing the MAP button at first showed a map of somewhere abroad (Germany possibly), but after a few minutes showed my correct location to within 100yards. However when I pressed Setup > Maps I got a "Please wait" message that stayed there so long I got bored/impatient and cycled power.

Unsure to be honest. Would suggest waiting for the reinstall and reporting back. I suppose its possible that the previous firmware was already a version with the three partitions??

Successfully back to 3974

Version info shows:

HW: H55

SW: 3974

Map provider: Navteq

Map Version: 7011

Maps appear to be working (just been for a drive and map followed my location)

Hard drive is shown as Capacity: 18.64GB available: 18.64. How do I tell if it's set as 2 or 3 partitions?

Also I just tried putting a 32GB SDHC card in the slot. At first attempt it showed "SD card error" Removed and replaced and it said it was loading data, but didn't seem to do anything (maybe my impatience again  :wonder:  )

18 would suggest it is 3 partitions I think. On earlier firmwares I think it was divided up equally between music and maps at 15 each. The newer 3 partitions are much more biased to the music.

I can only assume you previously had 3 partitions so the maps were retained.

My sd card is only 4gb so can't comment on the latter sorry.

I agree that it would probably have three partitions and would also have had before the upgrade.

You should be able to check in the menu (but it might be in the hidden menu that comes after the 'Radio' menu - hold down 'Setup' for 30+ seconds to see).

However I suspect that the maps will have been wiped out.

A 32Gb SDHC card should be OK as that capacity was theoretically supported from earlier firmware. It could be the card itself or the file firmat that is causing that issue.

Do you use a Mac computer?

Has the SD card been formatted to FAT16?

Are the music files genuine MP3 files without encryption?

If it keeps showing Germany on start up, then this is know as 'Regensberg Syndrome' (may not be spelt correctly).

Google it or search this forum and VW Navi forum.

The button to access the hidden "Version Information" menu is on the same page as the Radio (AM/FM) setup buttons.

The 32GB SDHC card is working - it was me not giving the system time to start up! Also successfully copied a MP3 file onto the hard drive and played it from there.

Now just need to sort out the upgrade to 4024, then I can get/install the latest map version and finally have 7 digit postcode entry.

Re the latter, the 3974 firmware should give pretty much the same functionality....

That's good to know.

Been searching the net and found this, which (apparently) is the latest map updates for the Columbus. Am I missing something critical, or will this work in mine?

That is for mk3 Octavias only I am afraid (different type of Columbus).

GRRRRR :@

Why don't they make that clear on the site?!

Yr not the first to be fooled by any stretch......

I thought it was too good to be true.... nothing for nothing and all that.

Oh well, back to searching on fleabay.

I am a newby to this forum!

I have trouble with my Columbus maps fitted to my Superb Estate L&G. Navigation around Reims France (motorway) states "Off Road". Similar in Strasbourg centre. Assume need to update maps though the car was registered by Skoda management December 12 and I bought 8,000 miles later from Skoda dealer. No navigation map supplied with car!

Separately I have a Becker portable nav. system. Fantastic function and ease of use. Makes Skoda nav. system seem hopelessly over complicated. The import of this is that I get f.o.c lifelong map updates for my Becker. Recent email announcing changes shows that the maps supplier (NavTec) also supplies OEMs including Skoda. Map downloads seem to be available though the process will take 4 days plus several hours! Minimum SD card type 10, 4 GB.

I cannot finds version details via Skoda Nav screen which makes life a tad difficult. Any ideas please?
