Skoda Fabia 1.4 16v Petrol 2000 - Speedometer not working

Featured Replies

Dear Fellow Contributors,

Hello To All !

I'm new on this forum and was hoping some user with a big heart might be able to help me please - a very big please.

Question regarding my:    Skoda Fabia 1.4 16v petrol 2000:

My speedometer has broken and I understand the cable can be removed and replaced. The speedometer cable is at the front of the car somewhere near the oil filter and can be removed.

Has anyone got any helpful information they could pass on in order to put this matter right?

Is a job that can be done a none mechanic type of person - such as I?

Your help would be much appreciated?

Yours Kitfabia

The difficult part would be routing the new cable!

dashboard may need to be removed.

Skill level would be 4 maybe 5 out of 10

disconnect battery

remove cluster

remove airbox

find cable attachment on the gearbox

remove / unplug  by screwing off.

follow cable and see if it enters bulk head.

insert new cable and route correctly

BUT

before you do this, I would be attempting to check if the cable is ok first and not a gear issue with the speed sensor in the box.

to check this, unplug the speed sensor and look at the cogs if you move it around the speed sensor should move at the other end.

(thats assuming its physical)

If its an electronic speed sensor... then you need to loacate the

12+

12-

12+ Pulse.

connect a multimeter to 12+ Pulse and drive and see if you get any readings.

The Fabia doesn't have a cable driven speedometer.  The car either gets its speed signal from the gearbox or from the ABS unit.  A fault code read and a wiring check may be in order.

i think it comes from the front wheel abs sensor via the abs unit on those rather than the speed sensor in the gearbox
